Security

On Royal Road, we value the security of our accounts and offer multiple ways to further secure your account. Some of these systems are behind the scenes, while others require action from users, like two-factor authentication.

Two-Factor authentication

In order to use this function an external 2FA app like Google Authenticator or Authy will be needed on your phone or desktop. After installing either of these apps you can head over to our 2FA page and enable this extra layer of security.

When activating 2FA you will receive a list of back-up codes. These are important in the case that you ever lose access to the 2FA solution that is used. Without one of these codes, you will be unable to access your account anymore.

Changing your password

Apart from 2FA, the basics still apply. While we do not force timed password changes, it is always a good idea to change your password once every period of time. Make sure not to use a Password that was in a data breach on another platform. You can check if your email has been seen in recent data breaches via the external site https://haveibeenpwned.com/. 

Passwords can be changed from the Change Password page.

Changing your email

This feature can be accessed from the Change Email page, found in Settings > Change Email.

In order to confirm and verify the changed email, a confirmation email will be sent to the new email address. Only when the link in this confirmation email is visited is the change effective.

Changing your username

Your username can be changed from the Change username page, found in Settings > Profile information.

Please be aware that:

·         You may only change your username once every 6 months.

·         You may not choose a username already in use by a user.

·         You may not choose a username that has been used by another user in the past 12 months

Managing external logins

External logins can be added or removed from the External Login page.

Recover password

In almost all cases, the recover password option will work. This option sends a reset link to your linked email from where you are able to set a new password. If this does not work, please reach out via a support ticket for a more thorough verification. 

In the case that one lost access to the 2FA and has no backup codes saved there is almost no way that we can provide access to your account again. 

Note that deleting an account is permanent and irreversible.

Download account

Before you delete your account, it is recommended to download all data that Royal Road stores about you. The following data is included when downloading your account:

• Account Data
• Fictions
• Chapters
• Drafts
• Comments
• Posts
• Private Messages

This data is downloadable from the Download Account page.

Delete account

This is the way to delete your account. Data is deleted permanently and this action is irreversible.

Please read this warning before proceeding. If you still want to delete your account, it can be done from the Delete Account page.
