The Houndsman [Base-Building LitRPG]

Base building, Huskies, What's not to like?

This is a fun read with cute dogs, powers, and base building litrpg elements. If you're into any of these elements, or if you're just a dog lover, this is the story for you. Well-written prose with excellent grammar that flows well, this is clearly not the author's first rodeo & the writing stands above most of what you'd find on this site.

The story's still early, but with how this is shaping up, it's going to be a blast!

my first story ^U^

Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead

Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets?
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow

Hey, now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play
Hey, now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

It's a cool place and they say it gets colder
You're bundled up now wait 'til you get older
But the meteor men beg to differ
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture

The ice we skate is getting pretty thin
The water's getting warm so you might as well swim
My world's on fire. How about yours?
That's the way I like it and I'll never get bored

Hey, now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play
Hey, now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

Go for the moon
Go for the moon
Go for the moon
Go for the moon

Hey, now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play
Hey, now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars

Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas
I need to get myself away from this place
I said yep, what a concept
I could use a little fuel myself
And we could all use a little change

Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets?
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow

Hey, now, you're an all star, get your game on, go play
Hey, now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

A Gentleman's Curse

Amazing characters. Amazing storytelling

I really enjoyed this story - and it was the characters that did it for me. From the main to the side characters, the dialogue, characterization, and sheer emotional tension is just masterfully done. You grow with the characters as they grow, bonding with them over the long course of the story. The story takes on the challenge of handling teenage emotions - which, as we all know - can be an extremely turbulent time.

Coupled with a story that was clearly going places, and what had been narrated thus far had me truly hooked. I do truly hope that this is picked up again one day. It'd be a true shame if it weren't!

Void Breaker

Ambitious. Unconventional. A Worthwhile Read.

Alright, I see some reviews talking about Liz and her perceived character shortcomings. About how her powers are gimped for no reason and that the author secretly wants her to suffer. I'm here to say that these criticisms feel hollow to me. My impression of this well-written story is very different.

To start, the hook in the first chapter is almighty. Few stories on RR can get my adrenaline pumping and my emotions all worked up in the first chapter alone, but Void Breaker did just that. Liz's epic moment turned into tragedy. Echoes of sabotaged figure-skating champions come to mind, and it's an incredibly effective hook. Grammar is great, and the style makes for an easy read, which bolsters the strength of this story.

From there, we fast forward to the aftermath of those events, where Liz is forced to deal with the repercussions of that tragedy. And I think that's a recurring theme we see in this story, even after system apocalypse manifests and Liz obtains a chance at obtaining what she desires most.

I say this because her newfound powers are not an 'I win' button. Every decision in this universe has consequences. To gain power, one must sacrifice something of equal value. It forces every decision to be made with great care and adds real weight to the leveling system that I don't see in most other sysapocalypse/litrpgs.

I can't say much more without going deep into spoiler territory, but Liz's powers are unique. The narrative is less about gimping her powers, and more about discovering how a normal girl would realistically go about learning how to use these powers. What may initially come across as weakness is simply someone learning how to walk, and then run - an aspect most stories gloss over entirely. As a result, when Liz grows, we grow with her, and that is an extremely satisfying feeling that's core to all progression fantasies.

So, while Liz does trip up and makes decisions that are not in her best interest, it's always realistic given what a normal girl might do in her situation, even if it can feel a bit frustrating at times. But she learns, and I have a feeling we'll see her continue to develop as she confronts future challenges. We're already seeing her learn the use of her powers, and I'm excited to see that character arc progress.

Now, as for weaknesses - I personally feel that it's not the characterization, but rather the story thus far. And that's simply because sysapocalypses(apocalypsii?) tend to be massive epics, and we've just barely scratched the surface. How the broader universe develops, how Liz finds her place within it, and how deep the worldbuilding gets make a massive impact for sysapocalypse enjoyment. Right now, it's a fun read about Liz attempting to figure out her situation, but we've yet to get into the really meaty content. I'm sure it's there, it just feels like it's yet to come.

In summary - this story has a ton of potential, and I like where it's going. I encourage the author to continue it despite what the detractors say, because it'd be a damn shame to see such a promising story dropped.

Dante's Immortality

Review for a dead fic, but a glorious one

Alright, so it's been two years since this stopped serializing, but that's irrelevant. I wanted to express my appreciation for this glorious story that we all got to read for free. I believe the author stopped because they were unhappy with the story and prose, but I disagree.

I enjoyed every minute of this ride, even when it turned tragic at times. I do hope it is picked up and finished one day. I'll be here, waiting.

Armored

What an epic ride. Please continue!!

Armored was one of those gems I stumbled upon on RR. It hit all the right buttons, it told of amazing characters in an even more amazingly post-apocalyptic world. And it did power armor as good or better than the rest of them!

I really have no criticisms to offer, this is one of my favorite stories on the site, and played a role in influencing my own writing. All I can ask is that the author continues and finishes this, because it'd be a tragedy to let such a gem go uncut.

The New World

The Finest Battle Action In The Land

Right off the bat - if you're a battle junkie, you will love this story. The author has a mystical ability to turn each and every fight into a perfectly-choreographed maelstrom of epic that gets your blood pumping and your heat beating each and every time. I'm still trying to decipher this masterwork of action prose.

And it doesn't stop there! The fights tie beautifully with the leveling system, making for satisfying, believable, and well-paced upgrades.

I used to be a patron of this story, though stopped because of life interfering with my reading time. That, and past the ||yawm battle||, I felt like there wasn't a whole lot to hook me apart from the fights, which, as marvelous as they are, did grow a touch repetitive.

Despite all of that, this story is easily a 5 star read. Thank you for sharing this gem with the world!

The Arcane Emperor

This story inspired me to become a writer

No joke. Aternus, if you're seeing this(please tell me you are), I want you to know that this story singlehandedly inspired me to become a writer. I have the honor of being Aternus' very first patron, back before he even had a patreon setup, because I was obsessed with this story.

The years have passed somewhat since then, and my ability to spot defects in a story has improved, but even so, this story will always hold a special place in my heart. The adventure, the powers, and moreover - the incredible complexity of the protagonist's powers(while never coming across as confusing) - it all wove together to form a beautiful, magical experience.

Thank you so much for sharing this story with the world. It was the very first story I read on RR, and it has played such a pivotal role in shaping who I am as an author today - words are not enough to express my gratitude.

Paladin

This story grabbed me by the horns(yes I claim to have horns), and threw me around until the last chapter, and I absolutely adored every minute of it!

There is a real tension in the MC's journey that had me eagerly consuming every chapter until the fateful moment(I'm being ambiguous to avoid spoilers), that I find lacking in so many other stories.

This story was very influential in the formation of my own story, so thank you author, for being an inspiration. I do hope you will come back one day :-)

Polymath Redux Annex

An excellent effort. Heartbroken at its fate.

It may seem pointless reviewing a story so old, but Polymath Redux holds a special place in my heart. It is the first webnovel I ever read, and when the effort was taken up by a new author, I was in cloud 9. This rewrite was truly excellent in every way, the only tragedy here is that it was dropped.

Author - I applaud your effort, and I silently pray that you will pick this up again one day!
