Paranoid Mage

Paranoid Mage
by InadvisablyCompelled
146 pages

Callum had seen things all his life.  There are monsters and beasts living among people, but he learned very early not to admit such things, not if he didn’t want people to think him crazy.

It turns out that the supernatural is real, but at thirty Callum has no desire to be part of that secret.  Not that he has a choice when it turns out he is a mage, albeit one that hasn’t cast any spells in all his life.  There are requirements, duties, and education that the powers that be insist he be subject to.

To hell with that.

Paranoid Mage is an urban fantasy but it goes rather sideways from the normal stuff fairly quickly.

Chapters are Fridays, 5PM EST, with approximately 5,000 words per chapter.

(This is the same length as Blue Core, just with different perspectives inline rather than separated)

For the first week (Jan 3-7) there will be one chapter a day!

Jackal Among Snakes: GameLit Fantasy Progression

Jackal Among Snakes: (...)
by Nemorosus
327 pages

The royal bastard of House Vasquer, Argrave, has changed after his stay studying magic at the Tower of the Gray Owl. The sickly man's awkward posture and cruel behavior have been replaced with a neat dignity and acerbic wit. His listless life has found a path of undeniable purpose. Most come away thinking he seems to know too many details about too much. Few can claim to know his motives or his goals.

Behind the scenes, though, the primary contributor for an open-world RPG's wiki battles existential dread and things far beyond his ken as he struggles to adapt to a grim, gothic fantasy world that he had the misfortune to claim as his favorite game. This is his tale.

#####What to expect from this story#####

This piece is a high-fantasy style story, featuring many of the species and surroundings one might expect to find in such a world. The cultures are original and well-developed, with the primary setting being a European-style feudal society. Warfare, fell beasts, and natural disasters are commonplace in Berendar, and take the center of many plots. The protagonist is a smooth-talker, but the world does not exist for him; he must struggle to gain power.

A strange accident hurls a man thousands of years into the future to find that disasters have transformed the world into a fantastical setting of monsters and magical swordsmen. Our protagonist does not become a hero. Instead he is recruited into a heretical cult led by a foul necromancer. To survive this new world, he must adapt to life as one of the dark lord’s evil lieutenants, carrying out impossible orders, scheming against his rival cultists, avoiding the real heroes out to kill him, and developing his own personal brand of magical swordcraft.

For the longest time, Aideen Fiachna had only one prescient wish; to be the daughter her parents could take pride in.

The idea was a tall order, especially as her father stood at the head of the Templar order, and her grandfather as the Pope. However, she endeavored to try nonetheless.

Yet fate had a different path in store for her.

For all her efforts, all her best laid plans, were but the broken off crumbs of 'one day'. That day, she was brutally slain by a vile, accursed undead being.

Though, not even restful eternity awaited her in death.

She awakened inside a coffin. Her coffin. During her own funeral wake. Discovering, to her horror, that she had risen. Not somehow resurrected, no, but back in the form of that most hated of beings--the curse of undeath.

What will fate deal her next?

Chapters will range from 1-2.5k words, scheduled for release every day from Monday to Friday.

-Character progression in a journey of self discovery that spanned the ages

-World building

-Tragedy and Comedy in roughly equal measures

-Occasional action

Do not expect:

-Much in terms of romance

-Politics, barring passing views and mentions

-A lighthearted tale. This story will be a good bit grimmer than my previous one

Any comments, reviews, and criticism will be much appreciated.

And thank you for reading.

This story is my original work and only posted on the Royal Road website. If you should find this story elsewhere or under another name, please let me know.

Also please don't be too hard on me when I make occasional grammatical mistakes, English is my third language after all. XD

Edit suggestions are very welcome though.

SYRINE - Into the Grim (...)
by Wong40k
308 pages

It was the end of the 41st millennium and Warmaster Abaddon’s Thirteenth Black Crusade had concluded with the destruction of the Fortress World Cadia, resulting in the Great Rift known as Cicatrix Maledictum being unleashed unto the Imperium of Man.

A mysterious figure named Syrine befriended an eccentric Mechanicus Arch Dominus to reach a certain imperial space just as the Great Rift was tearing through the galaxy. Her mission: to activate a secret psychic beacon that was an abandoned project of the Emperor.

With help from the Mechanicus, she successfully reached and activated the arcane device and in the process came close to becoming omnipotent for a brief moment.

None knew what she had witnessed during her glimpse of omnipotence, but it drove her to risk it all on a great gambit. Utilising forbidden knowledge and fuelled by the massive power surge from the psychic beacon, with her transcendent level of intellect she reached out to summon a solution. Her call went beyond time and space, piercing the eternal horizons between dimensions.

From a place further than the edge of the universe, a single consciousness from a higher realm answered her desperate summon: a gamer geek from the dimension responsible for the existence of the grimdark universe cometh forth.

Master, This Poor Disciple Died Again Today

Master, This Poor Disciple (...)

630 pages

A silly cultivation novel about an airheaded master putting his foot in his mouth and his poor, clever disciple ducking the fall.

In the midst of faking his death, Xiao Hui finds himself trucked and summarily reincarnated into a cultivation world. With great hopes for what is to come, he gets himself taken in by a sect and chosen by a powerful master, but his master seems to have a hole in his brain! What's a poor disciple to do?

What Hui does best, of course!

A xianxia comedy in the vein of A Will Eternal and Spirit Blade Mountain!

-Cultivation/progression fantasy

-Neither grimdark nor fluffy, but interwoven with both silly and intense moments

-Not your typical cultivation protagonist

The Last Orellen

The Last Orellen
by sieley
328 pages

According to prophecy, the ninth-born child of Lord Orellen will have the sort of power that changes the world. But in a land ruled by magical families, no one welcomes the possibility of a dangerous new player. Fearful even of their allies, the Orellens come up with an extraordinary and deadly scheme to protect themselves.

If the most powerful people in the world wish to kill the ninth-born, they will have to find him or her first. And that's not going to be easy when the Orellens have called upon dark magic to create hundreds of heirs. The boys and girls are given new bodies, new names, and even new magical talents before they are scattered across the continent. Only one among them is the real ninth, but all of them will have to grow up in a world where they are fugitives.

Kalen, once fated to die, is now an Orellen heir in hiding. And he is determined to survive, even if he has to master his strange new powers to do it.

The Last Orellen is a long, character-focused epic fantasy with progression. It's set in a vast universe, and it's about a boy's journey to become a powerful magical practitioner. Reviews are deeply appreciated. Please do not repost my work elsewhere without my written permission.

What type of reader is this book for? You might enjoy The Last Orellen if you like...

Clever and resourceful protagonists.

Big fantasy worlds. Multiple cultures, lots of characters, many different types of magic--this story is expansive rather than closely focused on a narrow storyline.

Old-school epic fantasy.

Progression fantasy that takes its time. Our main character will be progressing through magical ranks, but this is going to be a lengthy story. If you're more about the journey than the destination, this might be the book for you.

RELEASE SCHEDULE: When the chapters are done, and I'm sure they're the right direction for the story to go, I release them. Sometimes, that means there are several out in a week. Sometimes, readers have to wait seven or eight days for one. At the time of this post, I've released 25 chapters and 90,000 words in ten weeks.

In the last half of December and in early January, I will be trying to build up a backlog, so we can have a more traditional release schedule next year. But ultimately, I will always prioritize story quality over on-schedule releases.

UPDATE: Currently scrambling to get real-life things done before the holidays. Next update is delayed. Hoping to have time to finish the chapter this weekend. Feel free to message if you want to check in. I never mind.

The Nine Tails of Alchemy

The Nine Tails of Alchemy (...)
by Outback Quill

Living life in a virtual world was never part of my plan. My dreams of the future were of university, of being a world renown researcher and pharmacist. Being one of the many unfortunates forced into a virtual reality capsule to live out my days as a popsicle, was not part of that dream. But not all dreams can be achieved, and sometimes, it’s the dreams we never knew we had that come true. I dreamed of walking a path of science, and now in a world known only to the mind, I walk a path trodden by the greatest scientists of all.

In these frozen dreams, I walk the path of a disciple of natural philosophy.

9TA - update schedule is every - Monday, AEST.

Story and art is copyright, and original content.

Life has always been a battle, but for some people that's especially true. Not everyone can take living another day for granted. And that was before the world started ending. Now that the [Trial] is here, and everything is going up in flames... well, life isn't getting easier. That's for certain.

Trapped in the [Trial], John is faced with a painful reality: If he wants to live, he has no choice but to climb. And if he wants to survive for the long term, he needs to keep on climbing. Even if that means heading directly into danger.

Dungeon/Tower climbing premise with a progression LITRPG focus. Not extremely fast-paced. Not a Super-OP MC. Intended for those with (or those who can relate with) chronic health problems.

Being written in the hopes of completing Book 1 before November 14th (World Diabetes Day)

New Chapters release on Monday

Tales of the Implock - A LitRPG Monster Evolution Story

Tales of the Implock (...)
by Konge
424 pages

Nyx - A demon, weak and small, too fleeting of a creature to survive the infernal wastes in which he was born - but after multiple brushes with death, the otherwise inconsequential demon experiences a destiny-changing encounter with an unknown and eccentric god, foreign to this world. Cast from the domains of old and conspiring gods to a land of which is sheltered from the divine, beyond the reach of whence they scheme, the impling who soon would come to be known far and wide as Nyx will find a new purpose.

Born of Pride, with the fires of ambition fanned and burning deep within, Nyx will grow, learn, and evolve. From a weak and pathetic impling, to that of a mighty arch demon of untold demonic power, nothing would stand in the way of his ascent.

Yet, the yearn of power might not be the only thing the power-manic demon will come to desire as he will encounter others who might just matter as much to him as the ecstasy of power does.

This story features a wide breadth of characters with unconventional views, morals, and actions. There is no black and white - there is only grey. In a world where strength rules, notions of good and evil blur. The protagonist of this story is not a hero. He is not human. He is a megalomaniac demon trying to find his place in the world of which he has been discarded.

This novel is my first crack at making something serious, a piece of work I can be proud of. It is a part of a bigger universe that I am creating, The Aethos, and I fully intend for this story to be professionally edited, then self-published on Amazon. The novel will continue on for a long adventure, as each arc will be made into a proper book. Therefore I heavily encourage feedback and interaction. Anything to improve my story and my writing is greatly appreciated.

Thank you, and welcome to the Aethos.

[Schedule] - Five chapters a week.
