Paternum: A Superhero Story

When Quinn finds an experimental superpower-granting costume in their parents’ attic, they didn’t expect to be drawn into a web of superhuman intrigue, but their discovery serves as the catalyst for that conspiracy to slowly unravel.

At it’s heart, Paternum is an extended coming-of-age story for the main character as they become a superhero, in a world with more reasonable stakes and less powerful heroes than many superheroic worlds. Themes include what art means to different people, and what it means to be a patron, whether as a sponsor, a parent, or a supporter.

I consider Paternum‘s primary influences to be the various versions of Spider-Man, J. C. McCrae’s own superhero story Worm, and Drew Hayes’ story SuperPowereds. I hope that fans of such stories can find something to enjoy in mine as well.

Paternum is primarily hosted on my website ( where it updates weekly in groups of scenes totalling approximately 2000 words. Here on Royal Road, it will update once daily with one scene at a time, but only after each act is completed on the home site - the next batch of updates is scheduled to begin on February 5th. There is a discord channel for discussion (, and you can vote for Paternum on topwebfiction ( as well. Finally, you can buy the first book of Paternum, The Swift Uplifting Rush, in a couple different ways - as an ebook through Amazon, or directly from me for a discounted price, or as a physical paperback from Amazon. Buying the book will give you access to Drawing Hands, an exclusive arc that won't ever be published on either my site or Royal Road.

Phantonics: The study of the phanton.

Phantons are tiny particles that make up the soul of each and every person. They are responsible for things such as the existence of ghosts, as well as "Concepts," which are mysterious powers one can unlock upon "awakening" their own inner phantons.

Adam Grayson, a boy mysteriously lacking phantons, meets Charlotte Ouderkirk, a ghost of the royal family of his country known as Requiem. He miraculously awakens what seems to be a Concept, which Charlotte recognizes as power stemming from the "World Mirror," something closely connected to her family. With Charlotte's memories wiped of important information on the matter, Adam begins to explore for the truth behind his unique Concept. He, along with many others in the story, will soon come to a painful realization:

Do they know anything at all about the world they live in?

Shadows Rise

Shadows Rise

It's a common misconception that we all see ourselves as the heroes in our own stories. Sometimes, hunting down the ones who caused you harm comes with the hefty cost of becoming exactly what you hate the most. Shadows Rise is a story about grief, revenge, and the consequences one must face when overcome by either.

It begins with two brothers who find themselves alone in the wake of a traumatic loss and become involved with a group of people set on taking revenge on one of the deadliest forces known to Valcrest.

Shadows Rise is the first of a series of web novels set in the land of Valcrest. New chapters release twice a month, on the 1st and 16th. For more information on Valcrest, behind the scenes details, and future plans for this series, you can visit our blog: Written In Shadows.

Journey West 5000

Journey West 5000

With her parents murdered and her brother abducted, a trainee Monk of the Gun pursues the one responsible, the Bull Demon King, undefeated Warlord of the Crimson Army.

Struggling to track down her enemy while braving the dangers of the wilds, she enlists the help of Sun Wukong, but 500 years under a mountain have taken its toll. Unstable and weakened, will he be more hindrance than help? Can he become the warrior he once was?

A Monk and a Monkey journey across a world...
... where the remnants of technology are seen as magic, while pockets of humanity strive to drag themselves out of ignorance.
... where the descendants of animal-human hybrids, once created as instruments of war, now seek to dominate the world as demons.
... where beings who call themselves Immortals and Gods preoccupy themselves with selfish pastimes, ignoring everything else.
Among other things, a story about growth, grit, and being better than the person you were yesterday.
Here's my rambling on why I'm writing Journey West 5000.

Journey West 5000 is my crazy ambitious writing project to adapt a classic epic called "Journey to the West" for a global, modern audience. It's a sci-fi story disguised as fantasy, and has some road trip + monster of the week elements (as does the original Journey to the West).

No system, definitely no harem, gradual power progression. Hmm, what else can I put here so potential readers know what to expect?

My writing style for now is mostly "show don't tell", because I believe that readers don't need to have everything pointed out to them, and that they should be allowed to make up their own minds about characters based on the actions of those characters. I'm also trying to be less long-winded (a weakness pointed out by some friends) in order to write according to something Neil Gaiman said, which is to write as though I'm the one who has to pay for every word, not the reader. This will bring down my chapter word counts, and might drive away potential readers, but I believe there's value in learning to compress and be concise. All chapters posted here will have been edited.

Constructive criticism, comments, and feedback would be very much welcome and appreciated. Please, please help point out any typos or grammatical mistakes, I'm striving to minimize those as much as possible.

Above all, I hope you enjoy my story.

The Wandering Inn updates every Tuesday and Saturday on the main website. Join the discussion there.

An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, or a place to find adventures, a starting ground for quests and legends.

In this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her.

But an inn is what she found, and so that’s what she becomes. An innkeeper who serves drinks to heroes and monsters–

Actually, mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

This is the story of the Wandering Inn.
