The Way Ahead

The Way Ahead
by NorskDaedalus
ONGOING
226 pages

Edwin never really saw himself as standing out. As much as he may have wished to rend the secrets of the universe open at his fingertips, modern-day science was just too well-established, requiring teams of people to push forward even the barest hint of understanding. The days of interested hobbyists making field-defining discoveries were long past, and he wasn't anywhere close to the kind of genius needed to lead a team of researchers forward.

No, he was content to be a mere leaf in the wind, following his classes but never really being inspired by them. If he made some minor contribution somewhere, somehow, that was enough for him. While his dream may have never fully faded, he just couldn't see himself ever making that much of an impact.

Of course, some things you really, really can't foresee. Like waking up in a fantasy wilderness, and having a whole new world of magic, science, and magical science to explore!

Congratulations! For starting a story in the month of April, you have unlocked the Participant in the Royal Road Writathon Challenge path!

Wizard's Tower

Wizard's Tower

[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

The humans call me Nemon Fargus.  They call me wizard, and [Elementalist] and [Enchanter].  They call me teacher.  They call me adventurer.

But I don't care.  Not anymore.  For more than a hundred and fifty years I've served the Kingdom of Sena.  Through four Kings and a Queen.  Two wars and a rebellion.  I've founded and taught at a magic school.  I've fought against beast waves and dungeon breaks.

But now?  Now, the one close friend I had left has passed.  So, I'm done with their politics and their economics.  The short and busy lives of humans are more burden than benefit on the weary soul of this half-elf.  Now, I'm looking for a refuge, a place that can well and truly be my own.  Away from the growing cities and the bustling markets, away from the pointless wars, away from the eager students and the arrogant adventurers.  It's too much.

I'm seeking the peaceful life of a wizard in his tower, studying magic to advance my spellcraft.  We'll see if that happens.

Author's housekeeping:

This story is a rough draft.  Feel free to point out errors, grammatical, spelling, plot, etc.

This is a slow burn novel, but will only ever be told from one POV.

I will be attempting to do the Royal Writathon to get 55,555 words by May 5th.

How well this story is received by readers here will determine if I continue writing after that date.

I hope you enjoy!

The fae are sick of humankind violating their treaties. Their Wyld armies are taking to the field, and the world is at war.

After serving two terms in the Iron Army's Building Division, Flint Woodson is done with it all. He wants nothing more than to find a remote settlement, work as a guard or a builder, and find a wife. Flint doesn't care about filling his remaining nodes with skill stones or wasting his life looking for a class. Wyldbloods like him aren't destined for greatness.

Flint's plans go out the window when the Universe sends him a Life Quest.

Reawaken the Sleeping Fort.
Protect the village of Lea's Slumber.
Give the Champion of Equilibrium time to grow.

Saying no wasn't an option when the quest involved the word 'Champion'.

-----------------------------------------------------------

The LitRPG elements will differ from what you're used to.
Since I'm not a fan of stats, I've devised a node system to go with the story.
There will be some action in the tale, but the primary focus is base-building and raising dogs.

This story is also participating in the [RR Writathon] and has 2500 words at the start of it.

Mark of the Fool: A Progression Fantasy

Mark of the Fool: A Progression (...)

After his parents died, Alex Roth had a plan: become a wizard. Through hard work, he was accepted into the world’s greatest university of wizardry—but fate had another plan.

On his eighteenth, he is marked as one of his kingdom’s five Heroes, chosen to fight the land’s great enemy. But his brand is 'The Fool', worst of the marks.

Rather than die or serve the other Heroes like Fools in the past, he packs up his little sister, his childhood friend and her cerberus, then flees for the university in hope of refuge, magic and to unravel the truth about his land’s evil.

There’s one small problem: The Mark tries to ruin magic while enhancing skills outside of divinity, combat and spellcraft.…

…that is, unless he can learn to exploit the hell out of it.

*****

This the first time I am writing a web novel type story, and I hope you like it. I like progression stories and I've always wanted to try and write one like a few of the web novels that inspired me.

I'll be updating everyday in April (starting April 1st/April Fool's day) with the schedule changing to Tues-Wed-Thur-Fri-Sat after that.

There are currently advanced chapters on my patreon as a thank you to patrons.

Chapters will be roughly 2000-2500 words.

***

Rating: This story is kind of like a PG-13 movie. There'll be gore and some swearing but not much beyond that. If that changes, I'll warn you.

Tone: Tone will be a mix of some action-adventure with excitement, comedy, slice of life elements and mystery. I won't be going too dark with this story. There will be mentions of war, some death, grief and violence.

MC: MC is analytical/rational with emotions. He is mostly in control of those emotions. MC will progress in power, eventually becoming very strong. When that happens, I'll add the Strong Lead tag.

Fights: Fights will be detailed.

***

Stuff this story won't have:

- Extreme grimdark content

- Murderhobo plots

- Edgy, anti-hero MC

- Pacifist MC

- Harems

Chapters will now be MONDAY and FRIDAY AT 4:00pm EST.

This is a mix between LitRPG and Xianxia. It's like a car that looks like a LitRPG with dungeons and skills, but the interior and engine are all Xianxia.

So no blue boxes and clicking +’s to get stronger.

***

What you won't see in this novel:

Bland protagonists.

Bland love interests that immediately fall in love with the MC.

Murder hobos who kill entire families and clans for looking the wrong way at somebody.

Pacifist MC’s who wouldn't kill a single person to save millions.

Cartoonish villains who are bad just to be bad.

***

What to expect:

A MC who acts rationally.

World building that has more depth than ‘strong people 'stronk'. There will be no rules only benefiting the strong and no rule changes as they see fit.

An empire that actually cares for its citizens.

People who act and talk like real people.

A magic system and progression system that are logically and internally consistent.

Realistic fight scenes.

Name: Paradox

Species: Snake, ?

Description: A tiny snake with great potential.

That was who I was. That was what I was. A tiny snake with great potential. The sole creation of the Great Core.

It was just us, the Great Core and I, tucked away in our little corner of the World Dungeon. Together, we hid from the bad-things and the Coreless of the world outside - safe from the horrors that would consume us.

Until, one day, the Coreless found us. Until they tried to steal away my creator. Until, with no other option, I swallowed the Great Core that had made me.

Only after that did I become what I was always meant to be.

At last, I became the Great Core's Paradox in more than name.

[The Endless Cycle] began.

Thus begins the story of a little snake zealot and his journey to greatness.

There are many stories about dungeons; places far more dangerous than the world around them. This is the story of an Oasis; a rare sanctuary in a deadly, everchanging world.

Gamelit fiction pulling elements from various civ and citybuilder games. Updates daily, with relatively slow story development.
