Gamble

Gamble

My name is Vak Tychus. Aside from the, regrettably striking name, there were very few things I'd judge, that made me - me. The name had to do with chance or fate. My last name was Latin, derived from the Latinized name Eutychus which was the combination of two Greek words corresponding to "good" and "luck, chance, and fortune."

Now that you know why I'm so unhealthily and exceedingly prone to gambling I can begin to teach you why exactly I love it so much.

There's a handful of things you'd have to know to really appreciate how to gamble. You'd be surprised at how much you can learn in two decades supposing you stuck with it your entire life. Although, there are some stark differences between betting a handful of cash and your life against monstrous creatures intent on your blood. Well, you learn a thing or two, if you can believe it.

Here, in fact, we can start with the first one: Taking a risk.

Try it now and start reading.

Fang is a simple cat.

Fang likes napping in the sun.

Fang does not like being called Chairman Meow.

Fang likes his belly being scratched for precisely 17.329 seconds.

Fang does not like being punted between dimensions.

Fang likes hunting and killing defenseless wildlife.

Fang does not like mysterious blue boxes that appear out of thin air.

Fang is having a Very Bad Day.

A few things to note:

Fang is a cat soul in a cat body, and that's not going to change any time soon. No cat girl evolution or possessed puppet or any of that.

The slice of life tag is there for a reason. There is no epic tale here, only a cat doing cat things in a (hopefully) interesting setting.

The game elements are a pretty light, mostly there for flavor, so don't expect a huge amount of crunch.

Nature is cruel, and cats are crueler than most.

The class divide still exists in the future, and it has gotten much worse. There are many different types of worlds, from the paradise worlds where everyone is immortal, to the resource depleted, war-torn planets where every day is a struggle just to live.

Freya O'Malley grew up on Earth, the worst of the war-torn planets, and wants nothing more than to leave. With few options, Freya joins the Federation Marines. But, unlike the past, it's a struggle to earn enough enlistment points to stay in. With the prize of a citizenship on a paradise world at stake, competition is fierce. Every week is a new war. Can Freya earn enough points in the constant warring of the Marines to modify her body and mind to stay competitive? Can a girl from the wrong planet make it against those who have all the advantages?

Posting every Friday. Chapters will be roughly 4k-10k words.

Edited by Aldous starting at chapter 19.

When you've maxed out your level, done every quest, and defeated every enemy, there's not much left. So after seven centuries of immortality, Sean wants nothing more than to die. Afterall was touted as a paradise, an afterlife where anyone could pursue their interests, from archery to zookeeping. The gaming was the stuff of legend, but for Sean it had grown stale.

But when a woman from a past life informs him of a real, flesh-and-blood descendant that has hacked his way in, Sean finds a new purpose. The AI doesn't take kindly to interlopers, and parks the intruder in the one realm so buggy that even the oldest, most powerful denizens of Afterall steer clear of it - the Bitrealm.

Sean must enter a land created for the original gamers, people like him who cut their teeth on some of the first video games released to the public. Will Sean brave the pixelated wilderness of Bitrealm to rescue his lost kin? Or will he fall victim to the force that has been making people vanish? One thing's for certain, he can't do it alone. He's going to need a few members of his original guild.

He's going to need some Eight-Bit Bastards.

"Hi there. My name is Richard Maddox, but my–admittedly nonexistent–friends call me Rick. I live in a world of superheroes and villains. A world filled with magic and physics-defying powers, and in this world I'm just an ordinary, completely average 17 year old boy.

My imaginary friends, however, are as far from average as you get.

You think you're good at deluding yourself? Well, stand back, because it's time for a master to show you his craft.

Welcome to my life, the life of a madman."

This story was originally inspired by the 'Legion' novella series written by Brandon Sanderson. If you've read those books and liked them, it might be worth giving this a read. The same goes if you haven't read them either, I guess.

It might also be pertinent to point out that this is both my first work of fiction and a learning experience. Feedback is appreciated, if you ever feel like dishing some out.

"Um... Hello, I guess? Is this where I'm supposed to explain what's going on? Well, I would love if someone explained things to me for a change, but whatever, I will give it a try.

So, my name is Leonard Dunning, pleased to make your acquaintance. According to my ID, I'm a fairly average high-schooler, living alone while my parents are somewhere 'overseas', wherever that may be. I'm tall, pretty fit, living in an impeccably clean house, and I attend a scenic high school full of friends, romance and coming-of-age hi-jinks. Sounds neat on paper, right? Too bad I have absolutely no memory of any of this. One day I simply woke up in this weirdly pristine world with a splitting headache and a nasty case of retrograde amnesia that left me a blank slate unable to recognize even my face in the mirror. Worse yet, apparently this whole place is running on fairly clichéd writing conventions and stereotypes, complete with obvious background characters and dense harem protagonists!

So, what would your average guy do in this kind of situation? I have no clue, but as for me, I decided to roll up my sleeves, grab a notepad, observe this weird world and work out what makes it tick. If you are curious about how deep this rabbit hole goes (and trust me, we will need spelunking equipment), you are more than welcome to come along for the ride."

Throughout someone's life, these will increase with time and effort, and all of society revolves around these Numbers.

What happens when this natural system of Numbers, the basis of all of society for all of history...changes?
