As requested, I'm posting this suggestion here: give users the ability to "follow" others for their reviews. People like to go to sources that they know they agree with for reviewers. Following somebody for their reviews could give them a new notification every time the followed user posts a new review.
Pros:
Reviewers are rewarded for thorough reviews by gaining a following, perhaps a new set of achievements for them?
Reviewers can bring attention to lesser-known stories by reviewing them.
Con:
People could follow a user they don't like for whatever reason to instantly give a downvote to any review they leave whenever a new one is posted.
I am loving this idea to bits.
I also like this idea!
Yep, loving this idea,
The upsides here by far outweigh the downsides, even if haters that would down-vote would get a easier way of knowing when a new review is posted, they would have done it already under the current system of simply finding those reviews through the reviewers profile, making them just do a bit less effort, bringing more attention to lesser known stories is always a huge plus. I can already think of a couple reviewers to instantly follow and i am sure other people have similar ideas.
Actually let me add on this, if you are given the option to follow a user's reviews, why not just make it a general option where you can follow the user, but choose whether you want to follow them for their fictions, so you can be notified when they release a new story, or following them for their reviews, so you are notified when that user posts a new review, one could also choose both.
You could make reading lists a thing, like people post their own RR reading lists and other people can look at that. Works similarly to reviews, and am extra formalised way of recommendations is cool. This is basically why we’ve been asking for profile follows. Books and reviews, both are a good reason to want to follow profiles.
It's also definitely possible to track this sort of abuse. If someone has downvoted _every_ review somebody else makes, this is probably abuse and should be reverted.
Love it and support it.
Go for it already!
I suggest adding something I like on goodreads to that. If I look at a review section and someone I follow wrote one, show theirs first.
fav. kind of fills the role of reading lists.
Disagree fundamentally with the principle of randoms rating un-published drafts (which is what every work on this platform truly is). It becomes a statistical scattershot of excellence, noise and vitriol that disrupts both the author's psyche and the process of review.
Right now the issue with RR is that reviews are NOT reviews. They have become a way of making an impactful comment to the author about why the "reviewer" (read this as reader) likes or dislikes your work subjectively.
It is very rare to see an actual review that includes constructive criticism or objective analysis on this site.
IMO only authors should be able to post reviews. If you want to become "famous" as a reviewer, write a few chapters yourself to understand what it takes to put yourself out there.
Hell, write about reviewing other peoples work, invest something to show you want to contribute. Show you're invested and capable of thought beyond "Awesome" or "That sucks".
The trouble right now on RR is the conflation of review and rating. Both of which have zero accountability outside of the community of authors on this site, and the only reason authors are accountable is because they pour brain-sweat into each chapter they post.
Reviewers as a minimum litmus should be required to do the same. Only then would I advocate for a follow button.
Additionally, scrap ratings and replace with upvotes.
