Re: Character Dialogue! More or Naw?

Not even a question for me.  If a story doesn’t have good dialog, I find myself quickly dropping it.  Descriptions of characters ‘doing stuff’ aren’t enough to make them interesting, imo.

Well OK, maybe I over-generalized.  Sometimes, monologues or first person narration can substitute for dialog and still hold my interest, but it depends on how an author uses them.

I agree

I LOVE dialogues. I even wrote a novel where they was no narration because if they are well done, dialogues can completely capture your character's personality, their relationship with others, how they react to unexpected situations, etc...

When I write a chapter, I very often start by dialogues because that's the funniest part for me.

My story is dialog-driven, so I guess I must like dialog. A lot. I am not usually a fan of books that have tons and tons of lengthy exposition in order to move the plot (a lot of high fantasy falls into this bucket). However, exposition is good if it's explaining stuff the reader needs to know and that can't be expressed clearly or naturally in dialog. Dialog isn't everything, it's just an incredibly useful something.

Dialogue is good. Just dont forget to have being doing things in-between. If you don't it might as well be two cardboard cutouts of one single pose talking to each other without any movement.
