Anyone know the source for this rough* quote
#1
I'm aware that this would probably fit better in assistance, but general probably sees more traffic. Anyway, I was thinking of a line which I know is a rough quote from somwhere, but I can't find it with a quick internet search.
It was something along the line of: "if he called himself number two no one would call themselves number one"
I honestly can't remember anything except the spirit of the sentence so the above probably isn't a close match to it.
Any help is appreciated.

I did a quick search myself, and found this:
'As for a person who acted like a hooligan with all seriousness, if he, Qin Yufei, called himself number two, no one would be able to claim that he was number one.'
--Lonely Marriage: Volume 1, by Xiao GuLiang, Chapter 39.
Does that help at all?

Great find, but that isn't the one.

I don't think this is a 'quote' per se, but rather just an idiom. It's common in some online Chinese and Korean literature. Of course, it's possible that it had its origin in some old work or some such, but nothing I've heard of. It's definitely been used in a lot of different places, at least.

This is a famous sayings in cantonese folks.
“認咗第二冇人敢認第一”
I'm not sure where the origin but it's quite common as part of the canton gangster slang.
