Hoooooooooooooooiiii!

#1
Hello all!

I've been writing for a long time and been reading for even longer, but I've never really tried to push towards a serious project in the past. I actually used to write fanfiction years ago, and that was fun but often a mixed bag for me and came with a lot of issues and weird hurdles to overcome. It did teach me a lot about what to do and what NOT to do as a writer though, both from my own writing and reading some of the things other people wrote.

I've also been drawing un-seriously for a long time, but I've recently been trying to get into it more consistently and actually develop a real art style and all that. The first thing I want to do actually is figure out a cover for my first story on here, since I think that's a good project to aim for and has a coherent sort of level of quality to shoot for?

Also, I would absolutely love any advice anyone has in general, but more importantly I hope everyone on RoyalRoad is having a good time writing and reading and arting!

Welcome to Royal Road! I’m in no position to give out any real helpful advice, but I’ll give it a shot!

Don’t be afraid to take breaks or adapt if you find that the writing and posting schedule you had set originally is too demanding.

Also don’t be afraid to ask for help either! People here are very helpful.

Love your story by the way, keep up the great work.

Welcome to Royal Road. In terms of tips, be sure to check out Cinn's beginner's guide https://www.royalroad.com/forums/thread/111469. Lot of great information there. As you're interested in Art, I suggest you check out the Art section of the Forums. Lot of good work there and you can share some of your own works. The Forums are a great place to get to know the community. Quite a few other authors here started out in fan fiction and migrated to original works. Hope you find this a great place to share your writing and art and that many people enjoy your work. Good luck.

Thanks, I'll be sure to do that! I can be a little shy when it comes to sharing art, but I'll try to muster up something in the art forum at some point.

Also, good luck to you too.

Welcome! All my tips are in the beginner's guide (already linked by Parker & Tea, but also in my sig), but I agree Purple about just asking questions here, for the most part the community here is helpful and friendly. Razz also normally advises to write something, even only a sentence, every day to keep in the habit. And they have a good point because the longer you go without writing the harder it can be to get back into it, but equally don't beat yourself up if you do miss a day here or there.

Ah, now I'm reminiscing about the wild wild west FFN was in the 00s. 😬😅

I hope you enjoy RR and your fictions find an audience.

A lot of us started in fanfiction and learnt so pretty big lessons from that!

Thanks! Hope the same for you! And yeah, seems like a few folks already have a similar background.
