As a writer, civil comments are always nice to see. A nice nod of encouragement. Critical comments can also be useful but abusive ones are the dread that hangs already on all social media.
As a reader commenting isn't an obligation. But it is important, as it is a way to support authors with a little praise, or criticism. A 'thanks for the chapter' is nice as well.
To answer the OP's question, I tend to continue commenting even if others aren't. I'm conscious I am reading others' hard work for free, so I like to comment and even leave a review. But I also don't tend to comment on every chapter.
