I wrote a WWII short story once. I even lightly researched German to make the German soldiers pop a little more in the narrative during combat. It was fun :)

This is going to sound weird, but right now the easiest novels for me to read are "meta" novels, or ones that feel like iterations of an existing framework. Reading can be a bit exhausting and dense fantasy novels can be hard to visualize and invest in so having a pre-existing knowledge base to draw upon, for example isekai or something like that, makes it easier to jump in without as much brainpower.
