Re: Supper confused when it comes to reputation on this site

I have been apart of Royal Road for about 5 or more years now and my level is 11 (I take lots of breaks from the site that's why its not higher) and my reputation has just reached level 12 today and I received a blue version of this
while I have seen people who have a reputation of 3 have
and another who had a reputation of 5 have this one
so can some one explain to me how it is that I have a higher reputation level but I am flaunting a lower reputation gem?

Reputation is literally something other users give to you. Each user has a certain amount of reputation they can give to others every day. Note at the bottom of my post it says +Rep? Click that, enter the amount of reputation you want to give me, enter a comment telling me why you gave it then press ok. That's how reputation works.
The best way to get it is by going around new fictions and telling people "great chapter" as new authors who are incredibly grateful will dump rep points on them.
In other words, it doesn't mean much.
You can see what you gained reputation for by clicking the link under your avatar that says "Reputation : 100"

That's how reputation works.I understand how to get reputation point and how to give them that was not my question. I was just confused as to why I had what is I am guessing the 2 level gem for reputation when I am level 12. Though just a couple minutes ago I think I figured the answer out myself. I believe that when they rolled in the new system for reputation I think I was already sitting around level 10 for reputation. So instead of dropping my reputation back to level 1 they just gave the me a colored version of the first level gem and now that I reached level 12 which would equate to level 2 if they had reverted my level I get the the second level gem. Anyways its not that I care what gem I have since I do know that it does not mean much on this site, its just that I was confused as to the reason.

Where can I see the gems? Is it possible to change them? All I found is borders

You can see the gem that you currently have. There is also no way to change between them.

There are five styles of gem that you cycle through. You move into a new colour tier every five levels, so level 6 would be the level1 gem with the second tier colour. Blue is the third tier colour, so level 12 you get style 2 (mostly-visible gem with some stone on it) and colour 3 (blue).

And so on.
Personally, I like styles 2 and 4 the best, and I miss my purple jewel, but alas. Progress marches only onward.
EDIT April 2022: Updated image urls, as they were broken

What I don't understand is why I can only +Rep a single point of reputation, but sometimes I get gifted multiple reputation points at once from a single person...?
Like if it's Minimum: 1 and Maximum: 1, why does that field even exist.

To be able to give max. 3 reps under posts you need to be at least rep-level 20. I think for max. 2 you need a level 11, but I am not sure.

The +rep you can give on comments under chapters is independent of your rep-level and is at max. 5.

Sharing something I put in a comment of a chapter because someone asked (with some minor formatting changes for the forum):
Also, I have heard that Point #2 is slightly different for authors who can give rep 30 times in a 24-hour period. Not 100% sure about this, but leaving it out there in case this semi-confirmed information is useful/interesting to anyone.
Quote:1) Everyone can only ever give rep twice in a 24-hour period to any one person.Point #3 seems most relevant to the current discussion. If you have any other questions, I will try to answer them.
2) Rep levels determine how much times you can give rep in total within a 24-hour period (from rep level 21 onwards, otherwise your limit is 20).
3) Rep points (not levels) determine how much rep you can give at any one time:
Over 200 rep and you can give 2 rep
Over 500 rep and you can give 3 rep
Over 1,000 rep and you can give 4 rep
Over 5,000 rep and you can give 5 rep
Over 10,000 rep and you can give 6 rep
Source: Axolot kindly provided most of the information I used to list the rep points needed to give x amounts of rep. Occasionally you can find some quite useful information in the forums.

Happy to help.
And some trivia I find interesting: Zethuron has the most rep at over 20,000. Before the latest update, he had a couple of thousand more rep and I believe about double the person with the next highest amount of rep. Even after the update, his total is still so high that he has maxed out on rep levels and is I believe the only person at rep level 50.
