Re: Why do all the Authors use silly names?

As stated by many above, I chose to use a pen name since I wish to separate my writing life from my everyday life. I'm a fairly private person and would just feel a bit funny if people I don't know knew who I am. I did choose a more "normal" pen name since that's just who I am. I personally very much enjoy the variety of user names here and the thread where people explained why they chose those names was quite enlightening. Then again, I'm not entirely adverse to using unusual names. My e-mail is hypercat37 which actually would make quite a good user name.

Samuel Clemens takes exception to your assertion.

Seriously, Pen Names have a long history.  (Says the guy whose pen name is.. The Leaking Pen)  Many authors use them for a variety of reasons.  And for a lot of people, there can be a difference in masking between the online handle they use, and their real name.  Hell, I have a few different handles that I've used over the decades, and honestly, I act and talk a bit differently depending on which one I am wearing at the moment.

Honestly I used my Artist name that I've had for over a decade now, though if I do move my work to being officially published I'll change to my 'official' name. But while I am here and experimenting I believe using my pen name is good enough.

Plus, it is almost like having a secret identity. A poorly kept one like Spiderman where a basic google search can find my actual name, but most people tend to be too lazy to do that.

I will start with saying that I've clicked on a few names to read stories from these answers!  But I agree with most of the others that its nice to have privacy.  I also love my user name.  It has been a part of me since I was in graded school.  It IS me and how I see myself as a person...a soul...an 'entity' of existence.  Frankly I feel more like Silurian than my own name.  So to each their own in the end.  :)

Stuff I have seen:
1. Imitating a well-known author in a fandom, charging for services, and ripping people off.
2. Creating spoof porn or neo-nazi sites in someone's name because they said something mean about you online.
3. An author calling up someone's boss and talking crap about them because they left a harsh review.

1) I live in a country where leftist American politics would be considered part of the extreme right. The internet is full of QAnon nutjobs that tend to assume everyone else on the internet is also American and therefore their sworn leftist enemies. I'd never feel comfortable writing anything touching my own political opinions.

2) I sometimes write LGBTQ fiction. Sadly, if I ever published works of that nature, I don't think I could justify not covering my tracks. I want to say nothing would happen if people around me knew I'm on the rainbow spectrum, but risking it is dumb when I don't know who's googling my name.

3) This is the internet, and English is my second language. There was this one time when I accidentally used a slur on a forum, not knowing it was a slur, and it's just sheer luck that I was using a fake username at the time. I decided to abandon the account because how shitty my reputation got after that. If I'd used my real name, I might've genuinely been in trouble for an opinion I don't even have. On the Internet, everything you say will always be remembered. You don't know who's reading, or who's screenshotting. It's so easy to miscommunicate and then it's impossible to have it undone. Cancel culture is fucking scary and ruins lives, relationships and careers.

4) I'm a woman and have a female-sounding name. Unfortunately, women often don't sell as well as men do simply because some people don't want to read female authors, or just unconsciously don't choose to pick up those books. I've been advised by multiple people in the publishing industry to consider a pen name for this reason and I will likely do just that if I ever publish.

I don't use my real name for privacy and safety reasons.  It seems that whenever most people find out my real name, they start getting really invasive...like looking up what city or address I lived at and asking me really uncomfortable questions.  Another more recent example is that someone whom I did not know found out my real identity and asked for my class schedule, "so we could meet in real life".  It was all kinds of yikes.
