So what is the protocol for taking holidays? Like, say you are going to be busy over the Xmas and new years holidays? Do you just tell your readers? Does that upset anyone if you aren't posting in your regular time slot?

I'd imagine if you said you were taking a break and not releasing on Christmas, etc. People would understand. I would just do an authors note on the top of the chapter before the planned break to let people know

Yep, I take a break for 2-3 weeks pretty much every time I finish a book. Typically, I'll leave an author's note with the day I plan to come back, and I've never had any complaints.
The only time I've seen readers complain is when authors disappear without a word, or when they promise to post a chapter but miss the deadline.

I'm planning to drop an author's note at the end of my pre-holiday Chapter to let the readers know when it's coming back. I figure I could take a break, and people aren't as likely to be checking back to read anyway.

I usually like to avoid an issue like this by having something scheduled in advance, but if you don't got it then there's nothing wrong with an author's note.
