Re: I'm looking for a fantasy story that's not Lit RPG...

Hi, I'm new to Royal Road and already I've been posting my story. But I want to read stuff from the community too. I noticed like 90% of the content on here is Lit RPG, and that's fine and all, but I want to see something a bit more creative or original.

I'm looking for either an ongoing or complete fantasy story with action and adventure, preferably with an assassin or some type of rogue. I'm a large fan of the Night Angel trilogy and Mistborn, so if there's anything that's out there, please point me in that direction!

'Fraid I don't do LitRPG, but, if you want to read a full fantasy novel, that's been vetted and polished, an original work that features a male lead, you could try "A Forgemaster of Wayland". It has an Isekai flavor, but is not inspired by anime, more inspired by early Celtic myths. Wow, just realized Forgemaster has passed 20,000 reads.  I don't believe its been on any of the moving lists for about the last half of that readership climb, so I have to say thanks for the word of mouth recommendations that drive it. Currently it sits  about nine pages down on the completed list, about number 180 from the list's- top.  Thanks all.

Hm, my story is a non-LitRPG fantasy/romance/action. The only down-side is that the fantasy part comes after 10 chapters or so. At least the action starts rather fast. If you wish, you can give it a try. And for the record, it's not the pink, smooching type of romance either (If you are not sure, read the reviews first before attempting to read. Link to the work is in my signature.).

Hey!

First off, welcome on the Royal Road! Hope you like it here.

I would be glad if you'd take a look at my story, even though it's a little different than what you are after.
It's an urban fantasy, taking place in London. A legendary mercenary/thief/assassin breaks into the British Museum to steal something seemingly worthless, and the youngest generation of two sorcerer families is given the task of stopping him, despite the fact they are in a personal family war.

Check it out if you think, link is in my signature. And good luck with your story!

Pauliuk Wrote: I took this more of a chance to promote other people’s stories. Also I am just beginning “The Beast and The Swallow” which is good and “Angel’s Dirge” is also nice so far.

Let me follow in that spirit and recommend the excellent author that initially brought me to RR: Vihyungrang

He has several completed stories: New Journey of an Old Soul, Lament of the Fallen, Song of the Void, and the new book he is working on is Power Overwhelming.  I particularly enjoyed Lament of the Fallen, but they are all good and Power Overwhelming is shaping up to be incredible as he gets further in.

Of course, for the sake of self-promotion I'll point out my book in my signature.  It is new, but it is pure fantasy, and has none of the litrpg trappings.

Regardless, welcome to the site and may you have many reading enjoyments!

Frame of Mind, by me. High fantasy novella, but low magic and set in an early modern city. It was the first story I'd finished in years. Inspired by old Hard-boiled stories and set in a world I had been working on for years. Here's the blurb and the link.

In a city of darkness and murder, the greatest danger is found in the mind.

Alany hasn’t tracked anyone since the war, but when his lover goes missing, old skills are all he can trust.
With no other leads, he is forced to contact a mysterious network of telepathic magi, and risk his sanity for hope.
When the mind is no longer sanctuary, and even memories can be bartered, is there still power in love?

Forge of Destiny

It's well worth a try. Don't judge this story by its genre tags or its summary. The world and character building is leagues above most of its peers here on Royal Road. Most notably the secondary characters feel like real people with their own goals and agendas. None of their lives revolve around the MC which is such a rare thing to see in fictional works. They all go off and do their own thing independent of what the MC has going on. There is no harem. There is no posse of followers. The MC isn't the chosen one or the smartest, strongest and most talented person in the story's universe. The world, although alive and vividly imagined, does not revolve around the protagonist.

kind of a eurocentric take on a cultivation story, its more similar to ancient rome than most xanxias, but with similar mechanics for the magic. Kid needs to grow in power for vengeance blah blah blahsci-fi/fantasy fusion world, magic hit earth long ago but everyone's technology didn't just conveniently break; reluctant protagonist needs to pick up the slack after his brother's party lost to the villain

My story, The Fallen World : A Dungeon's Story is fantasy without being a litrpg (there are some referrences to that, such as levels and special abilities, but the levels are more of a way to measuring someone's raw power, and special abilities are just spells with fancy names). However, well, it is a dungeon core story (although that starts in the 1st chapter, not the prologue) and it incorporates a lot of sci-fi elements.
