My story has a bunch of protagonists I alternate between each chapter, and whenever I write those different characters I tend to listen to a specific song when I'm writing them to help me keep to that character's personality while I write. So, what I'm wondering is if anyone does something similar when they're writing or plotting out their story, and maybe why you think that song fits your character.

Also it's okay to list one or two extra songs if they're for different moods or scenes with your given characters.

A few songs for my story are:

Jericho King: Unstable by Chaotica, the song fits him pretty well given his general mental issues and how he still tries to do his best as a Mask.

Graves & Molly: Friend like me from Aladdin (1992), whenever Graves is trying to cheer Molly up, it just fits given his status as a powerful magical entity and his love of music.

Aiden Caine: Sinner by Barns Courtney, just in general for where he starts in the story and the person he's trying to be.

I love topics like these since I always listen to certain songs whenever I have to write action scenes for my characters.

Song: Burning My Soul from Kamen Rider Build, because like the theme song of the character in the show, Song is a fighter that's all brawn and no brains, but somehow he always feels so reliable when he gets to work.

Shu: Revolution from Kamen Rider Ryuki, because of its tragic yet heroic vibe. He'd risk everything to fight and protect Song. The both of them share a tragic story as well which makes it even more fitting.

Aqua - Aquarius. While this song is purportedly about a drug addiction, which she doesn’t have, the lyrics fit her mixed emotions about her transformation and MC Tentachill.

Tentachill: 

Samurai Jack OST - Jack in the Rave. He’s loud, he’s obnoxious, and he uses music to control people (sort of). 

I usually just write with one perspective.  I get headaches usually just from dealing with so many of my own characters.  Wow, I think my theme song for my character would be . . . probably "I see fire" remixed by kygo but originally by ed sheeran.  I feel it's a good mountain song.  My main right now is in a valley and is slowly going to get out of it.  But we will see what happens.

Hmm I really should fix my book soon... the song would be  at the moment - Nowhere Man , by the john butler trio.
just about sums up my progress really.

No idea, but I've seen similar things pop up where people give new theme songs to their favorite characters from a show, game, or movie, and figured it'd be a cool idea to see what other people thought of their own characters. 

Especially since I usually use said songs to help my stay in character when writing, from the many perspectives in my story.

I find that pinning just one song to a character is restrictive, but here are two that come to mind:

I really like some of the choices here. You guys have this well thought out. I'm going to have to put some more thought behind this theme song choice and report back. haha

I'll go with Science Fiction Double Feature from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I do the same thing with my characters. Some characters have different songs to represent the different aspects of their personality, or sometimes there's a specific song that I want to write a scene around. 

Tetsuya's song at the beginning of the story is Follow You by Bring Me The Horizon. I think it best captures his somber feelings of being directionless. He feels lost in a strange new world and he has no real goals of his own to push him forward. It also shows the romantic undertones in his relationship with Chelsea. 


Chelsea's song is either Centuries by Fall Out Boy or RISE by I, Prevail. Both songs have similar themes of being ambitious and chasing after greatness, so they're kinda interchangeable. Chelsea is very goal-oriented and the entire story is basically about her chasing after her dreams.

Adaman is probably 'too much' by sufjan stevens.
Before the start of the story it would be more like a mix of John Cages 4'33'' and Isao Tomita's version of the star wars theme.

Evelith is 'New soul' from Yael Naim or 'open your eyes, you can fly' by Liz Wright

(their relationship is very clearly not the 'allright' by jamiroquai they allude to in one of the episodes)

Leste is probably 'song 2' by blur

San Yaoyao is the 16 horsepower version of 'sinnerman'

Little Vi is some acoustic post-neo-drum'n'bass-folk tune written in 2152 covered by a chamber ensemble centuries later on instruments that aren't invented yet

The protagonist of my current story is a musician robot that loves to make mechanical music and do concerts of loud electronic tunes. While I liked listening to the album No Diving when writing it since it fit the story's theme, songs like Live Wire fit her personality more.

Oh, I think I've got some songs no one will know.

I do not have something like a song for any main character, I use sticky notes stuck to my screen to serve as reminders of character traits. I do use music to set moods to situations though

For my first introduced protagonist, Katsai Cree, there is one song that I think stands out. It is actually a song created by Joy Aileen called Black Wings and is an original by her for Skyrim, but the lyrics stood up to me. They explain Kat's eternal struggle and constant fears but also her hatred towards a tyrannical power. 

For my second introduced protagonist, Kagin (full name waiting to be revealed), is a half-elf druid who has a unique power within my fantasy novel. One song explains his personality as well as his power (to an extent). Lions Inside by Valley of Wolves.

For my last true protagonist, Genesis Eral, her song is a little harder because of her personality and history, but I believe hers would be more classical but epic and loud at the same time, so I went looking and found a song that suits her personality and thought process really well. Extreme Heights: Face Your Fear

I've mentioned this else where, but the lead of my novel White Hawk was inspired by the 
It's a Beautiful Day song White Bird, and a Revenant Knight character from it is inspired by Gordon Lightfoot's song If You Could Read My Mind.
For my latest work, Tasìa, I really didn't have a musical fix when she formed into existence. One scene's dialog strand was inspired by Primal Scream's Kill All Hippies intro.
I generally listen to Tool's Fear Innoculum LP when writing for it, and the Deus Ex soundtrack. I really should be breaking out the old Sepultura CDs for my next set of drafts as being most thematically apt to where the story is headed.
There are already a few allusive references to them in the story.
