T.W is unique within the RRL community

A brief introduction

BeamMeUpScotty or Scott Dittemore is an established indie author who writes a few different stories on; RRL, his own personal website (https://beammeupscottysstuff.wordpress.com/) and has several published works on Amazon.
With this quick intro you can already see that Scott is a step above your average RRL author. What catapults him to the forefront of his peers is his dedication to consistently uploading (twice per week) and meticulous grammar (I find less than one mistake per chapter and each is quickly rectified). Furthermore the quality of his writing is almost unparalleled here on RRL and deserves significantly more praise and followers than he currently has.

**  Detailed analysis below  **

Story/World building

Two Worlds is a science fiction fantasy story set roughly 400 years in the future. Human-kind has conquered the stars and has many settled worlds spread out across the galaxy. There are several super powers which control the vast majority of these settled worlds, which are in constant conflict. Because of this ongoing conflict the story is highly militaristic which is typical of stories set in the near future, as Two Worlds is. Scott does a good job in reducing the use of military jargon which, at times, can often overwhelm a casual/first time reader.
Intelligent alien life has yet to be discovered and so very limited ‘future tech’ is present in the story (which in my mind can often be a point of contention for readers of this genre).

Two Worlds is told from two main perspectives, although other viewpoints are occasionally utilised in order to add to readers understanding of particular situations. These two characters (Cooper & Ben) have extremely different backgrounds and so react to situations and events in their own individual ways. As a reader you can easily connect and differentiate these perspectives/characters as they each have their own ‘voice’, goals and ideals which Scott uses to build a complex and believable world/galaxy in which to tell their stories.

Grammar

Perfect, I have yet to come across another story here on RRL which maintains the same level ‘grammar nazi’ attention to detail. To give you some background I read approximately 2-3 hours a day on here and spend my time across multiple stories (last count was 98 active ones). So, I feel justified in saying that Two Worlds is among if not the best work on here in regard to grammar.

 Conclusion

I could easily continue to delve into more reasons why this story is amazing but, in all honesty, I will fail to do justice to this incredible work. Please give Two Worlds a go. It deserves so much more love than it currently receives.

Scott you are awesome, your wife and new baby too!
Please continue to write this awe inspiring story, I can’t wait to see where it goes.

Premium Work for Free, Who Doesn't Wan't It ?!

This is my 7th attempt trying to write review, you don't have any idea how hard it is writing it from mobile phone. RRL really had some problem with mobile browser, it really test your patience *#$%@*#

Let's get going to the topic shall we,

# Style: 5 Cookies

- The story is a very well written, especially the story telling style is exquisite. Such things are somethings you could expect from premium works or published books. The story pace flow nicely and smooth, it leaves no blank gaps and makes your reading immersion enjoyable. I say this one are definitely one of the very best works in RRL!

# Story: 5 Cookies

- This is more like dark sci-fi, one of the best. There are very few works here in RRL that had a high quality or worth mentioning. If you're looking for a really good reading, you should try it, I absolutely recommend it.

I can see the story was well planned, I can't quite found any faults that I can spring some salt or acid on it, well done! The story it self revolve around two protagonists with a stark contrast. One is the lowest of the low and the other is the highest of the high, but both goes in the same direction/theme. It tells about the space faring humanity, the society struggle, and the global crisis. I won't go into details about the story and leaks some spoilers, you should read it yourself. What I like to point here, the story were made with the quite the realistic and logical scenarios. You won't find xianxia's big BS, Jap's LN absurdness or other misfit here. That's a big plus on my book.

# Grammar: 5 Cookies

- My grammar is suck, but I know it is a good thing when I see it, and it was flawless (in my opinion). I can't even find typos, like I said before, it is well written.

# Characters: 4 Cookies

- It is quite fascinating seeing the two opposite characters development, especially when it imbued with quite the realistic psychology. But at some part (Cole char), it get exaggerated and  a bit awkward. Well, Cole is the biggest jackass ever with some anger issues. It is weird when he suddenly turned almost 180' and cool down in a day in front of a girl he just met and knew nothing. That's why I give it 4 cookies, I had nothing else to mention, it's all good.

# Conclusion: 5 Cookies or 9/10

- You know this is worth your time when you read it. This story is definitely a hidden gem buried in a pile of less worth stories in RRL. It didn't get the high attentions it should get, what a let down, seriously. So folk, lets show some gratitude for this fine and FREE premium work by helping it climbing the charts and make it be known. Don't let it be buried under the mud!

The story is good. The world building is amazing. The side characters are realistic and the MC is not a gary sue. On that note, while this is a good story, it's not for me. Personally, I hate how the MC keeps thinking with his lower brain. It's been 55 chapters, while he has grown, it's not much. Again, amazing story, just not for me.

I wasn't sure about it for the first dozen chapters or so, but now I'm staying up late to read. I'm afraid I'll have withdrawal symptoms when I finally catch up to the author and have to wait for more chapters.

Pace of a crippled turtle and too many POVs

As much as I like how well written it is, how much I like the characters and how good the grammer is, I have to be pretty disappointed.

It's fantastic, much higher quality than the majority of novels on this site, but the issues are that a turtle with no legs has a faster pace than this story. The pace is abysmally slow, and its made even worse with the fact that there are like 8 different characters that the author jumps POVs with. It wouldn't be so bad if it was important to the story, but the real issue I have with it is that you can literally skip every single POV except the actual MC (Mark Cooper)'s POV and there would literally be no impact on the story to you, as the reader.

Which sucks even more, because even though thats what I do (I pretty much skip any POV that isnt Mark, sometimes Eve) its still so slow its painful.

One of the best stories on RR

This is a true sci-fi story.  It is also one of the best stories to grace Royal Road.  I just binged-read over 70 chapters and was sucked in from the very beginning.  The writing style, characters, grammatical expertise...  There is no point in trying to explain how great this story is.  Read it.  You will not be dissapointed.

Well thought but slow pathed military sci fi story

In a nutshell, a slow pathed military sci fi by someone who actually has a good understanding of real-life military realities, mindset and tactics and how it could adapt to sci fi tech and problematics, including politics, in a well thought, “realistic” way inside a rich, complete universe.

By slow pathed I mean 60 chapter-long basic training slow pathed and that’s definitely the main reason this story ranking is so low. It doesn’t help that after that the characters points of view alternate nearly each chapter, sometimes even in the middle of a chapter, which breaks the story flow, even (in particular?) when they are all in tight packed action. In addition, quite a lot of arcs, while interesting by themselves, bring little progress to the global storyline which bring another kind of slow pathing to the story.

That’s regrettable as individual chapters are usually quite dynamic and interesting, the writing style is good and when there is (finally) military action it is well thought off and well written, in an energetic and compelling way.

The author also makes a point to write very different kind of engagements, don’t neglect the strategic and politics sides and a main part of its global scenario plan seems to be how warfare (and everything else) adapt to the revolutionary introduction of new tech after making contact with aliens (which is not quite subtly hinted to be in the plans of the story around chapter 20 and start to really happen around chapter 190…).

I think reading the whole story is worth it but if you are impatient, I suggest reading until the first chapters at base camp and jump to chapter 73 and read or skim up to chapter 83 when the first military operation starts. And then rather than read chapters in order, read it one main character at a time by skipping the other main characters parts first.

To explain the grades I gave:

Style is great, but I think alternating point of view this fast is a mistake that break the flow of the action and immersion. By example in the the current counter invasion, I think the rescue operation should have been cut in just three blocks, from start to getting to the POWs and then one block until they disengage with the Colour sergeant and potentially a third part on the aftermath (ie stopping at a natural breathing point in the story rather than in the middle of the action). With in between bigger blocks for Adm Ward and Nickelbaucher and same one chapters or part of chapters for the secondary narrators.

No eye-catching grammar mistakes

Personally, I don't mind the slow path of the story but that’s obviously the main weakness, so I had to subtract points for that. I'm also unsure of what to make of the sudden reappearance (and as quick disappearance) of Hailey in the story and how it is supposed to mesh with the rest. Especially how it suddenly ended. Withdrawing the team from the diplomatic meeting was also rushed and a critical diplomatic faux pas for little gain, but well, superpowers through history are known to become arrogant, complacent and complete shit at diplomacy. And by the way no one does suicide boarding because if you can board with humans, that means you can also just bring an (explosive) payload even faster by the same means. Interested if you can still make it work in an interesting but logical way (internal shielding?).

Characters are ok, especially for that kind of story and representative of military personnel but I feel most somewhat lack depth and are globally not a strength to the story. On the other hand, I like very much how Coop matures progressively during the story and how Grisham is a wild card that additionally brings or hints at underhanded and treacherous plots in the story. I don't really know how to improve that but by example what does Eve (or the GYSGT) do on her free time? I can't even start to imagine her off duty or how she would act and react in a civilian setting (well without Coop). Gold does fencing, somewhat does not interact with his family... Maybe that's part of what's lacking.

The Totalitarian Cheesecake
  • Overall Score

While there are some grammar issues in early chapters, I love the story and the world building. Both the characters are realistic from the angsty and nihilistic teenager in coop to the ambitious overachiever of Ben. I love both characters and while I am early on in the novel, I would recommend to anyone who loves sci-fi like.

Its more ore of a Eliot Kay style of writing rather than BV Larson or Van Dyke. So if you’re a fan of the character driven sci-fi plot this is perfect for you

edit: actually if you’re a fan of BV Larson’s undying Mercs series you will love this.
