Siblings with a secret. Portals to different worlds. A world in need of magic.

Zack and his younger sister, Zara, have had to fight for every scrap of food and luck that has ever come their way. All of that changes when Zack awakens as a Traveler.

As a Traveler, Zack holds the key to changing his small family’s fractured fate, and for his sister, he’ll risk everything.

The dangers that await him in the mystic realm of the portals, where ancient powers still linger, aren’t the only thing he needs to be wary of. Nobles, both good and bad, have learned of them as well.

The portals provide a way to fight back, to become stronger than their foes, to capture the life they’ve always dreamed of.

Zack will do anything to keep his sister safe, and it’s time to prove it.

Thankfully, magic has a way of evening the odds…

I will be uploading new chapters on Saturday each week around 4pm Mountain Standard Time.

(The story has been described as X-men meets Narnia. Which, while not entirely accurate, is still a fun way of looking at it.)

(Note: As with my other stories, this one focuses more on the characters than on constant action. The LitRPG-Lite and Gamelit elements are introduced into the story gradually.)

Author's Note: This is my raw, mostly unedited, first draft text. I am using RR to test out this story as I'm writing it to get a feel for how the published and edited copy will be received. Certain sections of the story will be changed or added to when I publish it as well.

A Very Promising Story, But With Some Caveats

Reviewed at: Chapter 21

This is an interesting story, with a promising worldbuilding and plot, with an unique twist in the usual "Portal LitRPG" tropes but, as of current chapter, There are some warning signs that the author should beware, for me, at least, stories where everyone hates the main character, no matter what he does or doesn't do, can get tiresome pretty quickly, it hasn't happened yet in this one and I look forward for new chapters, but it is something the author should be cautious

Interesting world and characters so far. The main character and his sister are well characterised and revelations about them are foreshadowed well. I particularly like how the "gifts" that they have aren't overpowered. Instead they seem balanced by some negatives and what they went through for them. To the author; I hope you can keep up the good work and I look forward to the rest of your story.

All Plot no Progression

Reviewed at: Chapter 51

I gave this 4 stars because it was good enough to hold my attention for 51 chapters. Unfortunately though, I can't really recommend the story.

I found this story by filtering "Rising Stars" for the tag "School Life." To be clear, the protagonist does attend a school so... there's that. On the other hand, the story doesn't feature much of the stuff that I enjoy about magic academy stories. You know how when you read certain stories and you really feel that the author understands what readers in the genre want? That's not this.

While I enjoy the occasional magic academy tale, my main jam is progression based LitRPG, and in that regard, this story fails miserably. If you come into this looking for a LitRPG, you're going to be really disappointed. Through the 51 chapters that I read, there was barely a few mentions of stats and leveling. One guesses that these elements will be featured more prominently as the story continues, but the author has already lost me.

Basically, this story is very plot driven. If that's something you like, you might like this one. I tend to want plot + something else, be it progression or character development or whatever.
