The Iron Teeth: A Goblin's Tale

Original COMPLETED Adventure Comedy Fantasy Anti-Hero Lead Grimdark Magic Male Lead Non-Human lead

A new, darker age is dawning. The greed of kings has ignited a seemingly endless war. As men fight, the monsters of the untamed wilds are devouring the frontier. Villages are abandoned as fields go fallow. Murderous bandits roam the desolation.

None of that matters to a nameless goblin slave. He just wants to eat as much food as he can shove into his mouth when no one is looking, but fate runs a twisted course, so instead he is whisked away to the far off Iron Teeth Mountains. To stay alive, he will have to evolve into something more than a simple goblin, and carve a bloody path through the forests of the North.

However, first he has to get over his crippling fear of trees, and survive in a place where everything considers him to be the perfect size for a quick snack...

The story is fine but with how slow it is, after a certain catastropic event I felt that Blacknail lost a lot of what made him interesting. Perhaps also the loss of too many interesting chacters with not enough replacement had an effect. I read up until the end of hearth and home I think. In the end though the slow pace puts the pressure on the characters to be interesting and for my tastes they weren’t enough.

Kleptomaniacs are amusing

Well I burned through 3 years of content in about 3 days so that was fun. It's an interesting tale of the progression of a goblin, it has a gradual pace, slowly building up to some steady power creep unlike some of the more dramatic and frantic upgrades in stories like Re: Monster or Reincarnated Slime.

The story as presented has two glaring flaws though, preventing me from giving it a perfect score.

The first one is Khita, she's super duper annoying and serves very little purpose other than being that obnoxious polarizing character. On the upside at least the annoying character isn't the MC being a dumbass, though the MC is a bit of a dumbass, but at least sort of learns from his mistakes. Or maybe he doesn't, his failures are at least amusing most of the time. The downside is that every female character is either a 2 dimensional character or flat out a terrible person. The bad kind of terrible where they're just kind of annoying and obnoxious and not the love to hate variety, though YMMV.

The second flaw is that the entire story is just littered with typos, most amusingly with the MC's name being spelt at times in all sorts of random ways, blackail, blakcnail. Saeter gets referenced as Seater quite a few times. It kind of undermines some of the emotional beats when you have to fill in random words to make sense of what's being written. Apparently this has been addressed in the ebooks though so that's something I guess.

All in all a good read, if the above points don't bother you.

There's something strange with the reviews here. The overwhelming majority of them are far too positive for what this story offers. I will clarify that I'm writing this review towards the end of the Hearts and Homes arc, which is making me debate whether I should drop this novel. It's been the worst arc I've come across so far.

This came across as a goblin slice of life adventure to me. There's a LOT of chapters where nothing happens - you can comfortably remove them without impacting the world or story. There are a lot of other chapters where it is nothing but base building, dealing with idiotic goblin tribes, or simply going through a characters day as they learn random life and survival skills. The story is slow but I'd argue it stagnates at several points, and not just during the beginning.

What you need to know about goblins - "Goblins are stupid and annoying." This comes directly from the author.

This will be reflected in many parts of the story because our MC is goblin. He's smarter than other goblins, yes, but he's not a solid character. No matter how smart he gets, he is still a goblin, and that colors all of his thinking and his actions. The character goes from cowardly and pathetic to stupidly overconident at the drop of a hat. He also makes a lot of idiotic assumptions and his understanding (or mis-understanding) is off mark many times (because goblins lol). Chronically clueless about things around him or things that would be considered important to other interests he has (like gaining power or status). At times he acts incredibly foolish or uncharaceristically intelligent - not much consistency. Several times does the character note how patience is an important trait to have, but in almost every scene where it's not related to hunting the goblin becomes bored almost instantly, and we are mercilessly reminded as he tunes out the world around him and tries to find food. Again. Many of the MC's motivations revolve around food despite what he offers. This is a weak motivation, especially when you are forced to read about it over and over and over again. It only serves to drive home how foolish the character acts. Does it matter if the goblin has assassinated powerful figures that oppose you? No, he's willing to trade it for cheese. Literally. The main character rationalizes many things, which isn't good, and many of his plans are moronic but somehow work out, I presume because of luck.

He's exceptionally stealthy and works as an assassin or thief, but is not particularly skilled in direct combat - there is a lot of subterfuge but any kind of main confrontations leave him underpowered in relation to the types of foes he faces. You also have to wonder how he obtained half his skills, because while he does have training in certain weapons and tracking and hunting, he actually has no direct training with assassination or thieving at all, but somehow manages to become one of the most accomplished assassins.

The world could be decent, but we're not given much of it to explore because of how slow the story is. Dialogue is passable most of the time, but don't expect any fascinating or deep topics to be discussed. Side characters are forgettable and I had issues forming any attachment to any of them. Even now I would actually prefer if most of them were removed. A lot of them are just "there."

If you like your leading character to be less than average intelligence, cunning, swift, stealthy, non-human, physically weak, incapable of wielding magic, childish, stubborn...you might like this story. Other reasons you may like the story: painfully slow, lots of minutae not directly relevant to the story or possibly relevant at ALL, slice of life chapters, base building. Underpowered main characters.

If any of the above doesn't seem interesting to you, I would avoid this story. I may edit this as I keep reading but I'm barely hanging on as it is.

A superbly written adventure.

I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with this story.  I avoided for a very long time because I assumed it was another silly story about a goblin who would power level and decimate everyone. I van say that I have never been more pleased to be wrong. This is by far the best written story on RRL. The author has real talent and can captivate and make you never want to stop. It has the right amount of comedy and the protagonist is an absolute pleasure to watch grow. I seriously do not want this to end and will be buying on Amazon because it deserves to be paid for. If you have been on the fence about this do your self a favor and start reading now!!!!!

Xenofiction at its best

What's there to say that hasn't already been said? I actually bought the first two books and signed up here mainly to get the updates while I wait for the third.

Blackanil isn't a very "nice" character, and that's why I love this - the author has really gotten into the mindset of a creature with a very different mindeset, drives and goals than a human being, and sustains this believably and consistently, often to very humorous effect, as the humans around him don't quite realize what they're dealing with. The author continues to throw in new developments and surprises as the goblin and hobgoblin characters develop, making for some gripping worldbuilding.

I had to read this as it is currently rated number 1 and I have to say I really think this story is great!

Blacknail is just perfect and hilarious. His reasoning makes me laugh every time. But of course I'm mainly here to say that if you have any doubts about the story you shouldn't it is really really good.

The Real Deal Holyfield it's clear as madness

Original, structured, clear, Great grammer, this is some things that signal to me this author is on a mission to make his writing for fun make him money while he's at it. This is not a dis to those who put out their story in fun and leisure. (I consider this most people by the way) The difference is extremely noticeable though when someone's half in and someone's all in clearmadness you are a pretty consistant man and it shows. When it's finished I will buy it, pure gold is the story and characters even the side stories are helpful to enrich the world you created so we can better see what you do. I'm the reaperce11 and I approve this book.(had to cut it short otherwise the goblins head might get to big jk..jk) Big fan thnx for the good read madness.

Great plot, filled with potential

I was scrolling through novel recommendations on some other site and found this hidden gem. Came to royalroad to check it out and holy shit the reviews were filled.

This is a seriously good story, and it is filled with so much development potential. The story could branch out in so many various ways, unpredictablly so. This is further enhanced by the non-human MC factor, wonderfully plotted out storyline and flow is just right despite being slightly slow.

I just love the MC and the way the story is in a simple no-unnecessary-bullshit perspective. The simple-mindedness of the views of the world are great and give wonderful portrayal of human insignificance. I'd give it 10 stars, though I can't.

Easily the best novel on RR.

At first I thought I wouldn't give it full marks, nothing can be perfect right? Turns out I was wrong. When I got my mouse over the little stars and I started thinking about each category, I couldn't bring myself to give less than 5 stars each.

This novel is pro-level. If you told me there were books in my language, I would go buy it this instant. And you'd be wise to do the same.

Blacknail is probably one of the most interesting MC I ever read about. What's so good about him? I feel like he could come alive. He feels realistic even though it's a creature that belongs to a fantasy world. He's a Goblin, of course Humans would look ugly to him. But I'm pretty sure 99% of RoyalRoad novelist and japanese lightnovelist would put him in a Harem full of Humans, Elves and Beastkins. That's Why ClearMadness is a pure Genius with a big G. He created his universe in a way that makes sense, and that's something way too rare nowadays.

I really, really hope he will never drop this novel (though it will -sadly- come to an end someday).

Keep up the good work man, next time you see Blacknail ask him if he'd like to come pay me a visit in France, plenty of good cheese here :)

Wonderfully crafted tale

A thoroughly enjoyable read. It was very interesting to read from the perspective, of all things, a goblin. Common fantasy troupe puts them as inconsequential set pieces set in there to act as a scene motivator or as a catalyst for direct action.  It is refreshing in a way wherein most dark fantasy takes the route of the fallen, tragic man or a powerful creature with a different twist on the greek tragic hero character guide. The protagonist holds your attention for simply being original. I could remember exactly one other fantasy novel that I have read that has a talking goblin as a supporting cast be that character was not fully fleshed out.

The storyline reads like from the villain's perspective if you are reading a typical heroic or grand fantasy novel. There are a lot of characters, battles, intrigues, and snippets of everyday life. It's a bit well worn the road the author has taken but it's compelling nonetheless.

Grammar lapses are apparent but are negligible for the average reader and does not affect the delivery of the story in any way. POV switching is kept to a minimum. Most POV changes are relevant to the story and gives the reader a clue to the motivation of the protagonist or the supporting cast with him.

All in all, it's a great read and a read that I'm will quite happily pay for.
