The Iron Teeth: A Goblin's Tale

by ClearMadness

Original COMPLETED Adventure Comedy Fantasy Anti-Hero Lead Grimdark Magic Male Lead Non-Human lead

A new, darker age is dawning. The greed of kings has ignited a seemingly endless war. As men fight, the monsters of the untamed wilds are devouring the frontier. Villages are abandoned as fields go fallow. Murderous bandits roam the desolation.

None of that matters to a nameless goblin slave. He just wants to eat as much food as he can shove into his mouth when no one is looking, but fate runs a twisted course, so instead he is whisked away to the far off Iron Teeth Mountains. To stay alive, he will have to evolve into something more than a simple goblin, and carve a bloody path through the forests of the North.

However, first he has to get over his crippling fear of trees, and survive in a place where everything considers him to be the perfect size for a quick snack...

this needs to be published

when this is complete you should send it to all the major publishers and get this on store shelves and in the hands of people everywhere. dont do one of those self publish things those books never sell well and this book is golden.

This is a great story, largely because it's from a somewhat unique perspective of a goblin, so the narration style is different from most other stories. It's built in a very interesting fantasy world. The character dialogue is a weak though, especially in the beginning. It does get better after the first several chapters though.

Although I felt that story became repetitive at times, I had still enjoyed it very much until..

Humor, Prejudices, and Mayhem: A Look at a Goblin's Life

Reviewed at: New Book Release, Worldshift: Virtual Revolution

I finished this story a few months ago, but I still keep thinking about it. The crazy adventures, the ridiculous situations, and most of all, the irascible Blacknail. If you enjoy different points of view, then give this one a gander. A goblin's life has never seemed so entertaining before! Sure, the world is out to get you, but no other creatures are as crafty or fun-loving.

While the prose is more utilitarian than artful, and the narrative meanders at times, the overall adventure is great, gory fun.

If long quotes are allowed in a review, here's one section that sums the story quite well:

“Blacknail the hobgoblin, I presume?” the man asked. He had a very emotionless manner and rigid posture.

“Yep, that’s me. I can show you my black toenail if you want,” Blacknail answered with a smile. He was rather proud of his black toenail. It was why Saeter had given him his name.

A hint of grimace briefly flashed across the man’s face. “No, that won’t be necessary.”

“Your loss,” the hobgoblin remarked with a shrug. The man had just lost his only chance to see the toe that terrified the North.

Outstanding! Could use more sneaking later on.

Reviewed at: Interlude: Where It All Began

TL;DR: Very good story, the interludes can get a bit boring tho.

The story is about a goblin that leaves his home in the sewers to live in the lawless north with some humans, the MC's pesonality is quite refreshing since he doesn't try to act like a hero and is a goblin (and not the japanese rapey goblin).

To get it out of the way first, the grammar isn't a problem.
The characters are a lot of fun, but i wish there was more interaction and less fights.
The Style and the Story are also good, but they have a few problems i'd like to mention even if just so that i don't waste your time with praises only, i only have one serious issue with the story.

The problem with the writing style is how it seems to waste the readers time every now and then, if you read the interludes it exarcebates this even more. Also, people waste too much time talking during fights, that's dumb and takes me out of the story.

The biggest issue for me is how author focuses way too much on direct fights and large-scale battles, when the story is at it's best is when the MC is sneaking around and doing banter with the other characters, and this problem seems to only get worse as the story goes from book three onwards, on book five i can't remember him sneaking at all, and i've read until "twists and turns 10".

The author has the problem of overestimating or underestimating things, in the sense that he makes something or someone seem great but in action it's not that great or the opposite, something is portrayed as no big deal, but is the biggest of deals in practice. A good example is magic, the author makes it seem as if it's like a rpg (rocket launcher) in real life, very effective but hard to get/make and hard to use it often (because of amount of ammo and reload time), but when in actual practice magic seems to be able to fire as quick as a bolt-action rifle and there hasn't been a situation where the reload time has become a problem for the user, the mages don't seem to have a mana limit either so the only real issue is knowing how to make the stuff and there is no real way to counter it other than having more mages and magic than the enemy and that's also dumb. (dodging and surprise attacks don't count since they are counters to everything, and getting to close quarters can also be countered by having the right kind of magic, so doesn't count either)

lesser complaints about the story that are spoiler heavy. Spoiler:

A crew of misifts led by a monster.

Reviewed at: To Forgotten Places 1

A crew of misfits led by a monster. The story is not as dark as one might expect.

The main protagonist is a goblin, and the author manages to convey its inhumanity very well. The goblin is not evil or good, just another creature entirely.

The writing is very much to my taste. The prose is not flowery, the action sequences flow very well. You never feel lost, wondering what exactly is happening.

The world itself could have felt bland or lacking originality. Yet the author manages to bring it to life.

Thanks for the story author!
