Lord of the Night Realm - Book I: Sojourn

Lord of the Night Realm - Book I: Sojourn

by sennabyrd

The allure of the mysterious is often compelling when one lives a normal life.

Eleanor’s life changes overnight when one moment she’s considering her new apprenticeship, then the next a talking rat pulls her into another world to save her from a man out for her life. Unfortunately for Eleanor, this strange world—the Night Realm—considers her something of a trespasser.

In this haven for outcasts, she becomes a ward to the vampire, Lord Janus. While it’s unknown if she can return home, Eleanor finds comfort, friendship, and love in the denizens of the Night Realm. But terrors from the darkest reaches begin to stir as they take note of her presence.

The biggest strength of this story is how much attention it pays to the characters and their relationships to one another. The main character Eleanor, Ellie, gets a number of meaningful relationships: her mom, her dad, her sister, a magical mouse named Gerald, and the vampire Lord Janus. The characters are all lovely in their own ways, so this is a comforting story to read.

The biggest weaknesses are an extremely leisurely pace and overwritten descriptions (which I pointed out to the author.) With a tighter structure and writing style, this has good potential!

I think that the Slice of Life tag could be worthwhile, because while there is a broader and high-stakes plot in formation from the looks of it, the story very much focuses on the day-to-day activites of the characters. I think that readers of Slice of Life, would appreciate the detail of the characters' daily lives.
