Demons will stop at nothing to steal Harper Hawthorne’s magical nexus. They are hot on her tail, and she needs the help of the Afterlife supernatural crime-fighting team to save her life.
But can she really trust a vampire and his friends?
Under the flashing neon lights of Las Vegas, Harper is a normal woman. A bartender by trade, she meets many people every day, human and demon alike. Word has spread in the Las Vegas Underground that she is the owner of an heirloom that can grant a demon unrestrained power.
A team of supernatural demon slayers, hiding under the cover of their nightclub, Afterlife, find out about the demons’ plans and make it their mission to stop them. With the power of a fairy, charm of an incubus, strength of a shape-shifter, and wits of a vampire, Afterlife is in the only thing standing between these demons and a power that threatens to change the world. But do they have the strength to withstand the demonic forces? Can they stop them before it’s too late?

So far I'm liking the story. The plot in the story is intact even with the subplots present so that's good. The subplots that I see in the story are the relationship between Harper, Alec, and I believe Brittney. My question here is: Is there a love triangle going on here? If there is it's an interesting one. Alec, now what's his deal? The boy got some anger issues, especially toward Harper. Harper seems to have feelings for this guy even though he treats her like dirt. Tsk, tsk Alec. AND Brittney is somehow involved in all of this. At least that's what I suspect.
Moving on: Harper, Heroes Journey or Heroines Journey? Another fascinating question. It basically boils down to this: Is her strength more internal or is it by connecting with others? It seems like to me at least she leans more toward a heroines journey. Why? In the beginning she works at a bar serving customers. She is shown to have people skills, and so connects well with others. Harper is not without her internal strengths either. She has magic( Sight), her initiative, and her courage. So she shows a heroes journey as well, but I think she leans more toward the latter. BUT we shall see!
I really like the unders scene and the San Fransico scene in the story. The worldbuilding and the action that takes place there is done really well. The unders are really creepy! The creatures, denizens, and shifting passage ways really do add to the suspense! The San Fransico is another creepy element in the story. Talk about being in the lions den! It's FULL of demons! Ileana appears in this scene in place of Harper. Did Ileana fear for Harper's life and took her place? Or is this a new power? Or is she to mentor Harper?
In conclusion to this mid-review, I am really enjoying the series so far. Definitely some really interesting character arcs and conflicts involving the whole team. That really does make the story extra juicy and a worthwhile read. I am looking forward to reading more!
