Endless Madness: Gods and Ghouls

Chapter 4: My Heart Is Not What It's Used to Be

"...Wake up, you son of a bitch."

"...I'm alive still, huh.."

Shinya wakes up in a dimly lit room with a squeaky bed, and weakly rubs his face for being slapped by his friend, Sulver. He sighed and tried to get off the bed but then was stopped by the sudden pain on his chest, he removed the blanket off him and sees the chest area is wrapped in bandages, and a strange mark on them. He tried to remove them but Sulver placed his hand on him and shook his head.

"No, not now, you can remove them after you recover fully."

"Fine, but I wanna know what's on my chest, it feels heavy."
"I'll tell you soon, just not now."
"Why? I want to-"
"Shinya. It's for the best to wait and let me explain everything later."

Sulver rarely talked back to Shinya because of his personality. Shinya knows that if Sulver stopped him from speaking, it means he really is serious about it and dare not to provoke him.

Fine, I'll wait it out, but why have I survived?

Lost in his thoughts, Shinya didn't noticed that Sulver has left the room and the room felt quiet for a moment. Sulver had left him alone to do something important, but Shinya still has no idea at the moment that his current body condition has changed his body constitute to another level.

It has been days since the fight on the hill, and nothing much has changed Shinya's life other than going back to his classes, but when he walks around, he can hear things a lot better, and from far away. He also noticed that his vision has improved a fair bit, but his physical strength has remained the same.

It didn't take long for him to notice that his locker is somehow clean and everything he owns are neatly arranged, as if someone had a duplicate key to it and fixed everything without a single trace.

Without a word, he walked to his next class and it turned out that he was the only one who arrived to the venue. No one was there yet.

Have I arrived too early..? No, the bell rang awhile ago, so there should be some people here..

He was thinking quietly and decided to just wait it out on his seat.

Where is everyone? It has been ten minutes.

He got concerned and tried to leave but the doors were blocked off, he tried to look at the window of the door but no one was passing by.

"I better break out."

"Nah, you can't, kid. Your trapped here with me."

Shinya panicked a little and looked to his left and saw a silhouette covered in shadows, the voice was neither male or female.

"What do you want from me?"
"Is that how you treat your saviour? Not very nice of you."

They stood quietly, staring at each other without a single movement. The silhouette then walked towards him with his hand extended at him.

After he extended his hand at him, Shinya's heart started beating wildly and his breathing sped up. He started to sweat and fell to his knees.

"...What are you?"

"Someone who made a promise to me, my benefactor."

The silhouette placed its hand on Shinya and he screamed in pain, the bandages around him started burning off slowly and his chest was exposed. The hand slowly removed itself from Shinya's chest and the area on where the heart is slowly created a spiral mark and there are black marks slowly extending to every part of his body with the spiral mark on the heart at the center of everything.

His heart is slowly beating back to normal and his breathing relaxed.

"Looks like your body is now adapting to your new heart."
"What did you do to me?"
"I only changed the nature of your body to accept the new heart."

"Your body is interesting, it already has the traits that your new heart was looking for, so this process was faster than I expected."

The silhouette was amused of the situation and laughed a little.

"Alright, now that I did my end of the promise, I have a gift for you."
"What is it?"
"I'll tell you this, this entire college is not what you think it is. As for what, I think you should ask your friend."
"What does he have to do with anything?"

"You'll find out after you ask him, he is your friend, after all."
Chuckling, the silhouette disappeared into nothingness and the shadows left by him pulled Shinya into the floor and his consciousness faded into the dark again.

"Shinya? Shinya?"

"You alright? You have been in a daze for a while now. Class is starting."
"..Oh, thank you for reminding me."
"Just doing my duty."

The classmate walked away and went back to her seat. Shinya then sat on his seat and class started.

He wasn't paying attention to the teacher a bit and felt that his body is more warm that it is now. He felt that the silhouette he met before was just a dream, as if nothing really happened.

He asked his teacher if he could visit the bathroom and was excused. He looked at the mirror and removed his top, to see that there is a large black spiral on his chest, right at the heart. The marks around his body seem to have disappeared except at his chest. He tried touching it and it was really warm. He sighed, and put back on his top and returned back to class.

Class ended early due to everyone understanding the teacher's words, and they all left the room. Shinya then went to find Sulver at the archery club, hoping that he was there. He then saw a girl using a longbow twice her height, she was shooting two arrows at a time and her accuracy is as good as his. She looked younger than him, but she is the same age as him, she didn't notice him until he got close. She saw him and stared at him for awhile.

"..You, did your soul change?"
"Excuse me?"
"Your soul, it's different now."
She kept looking at his eyes and it made him uncomfortable. He backed away and went inside the room.

She stared at where he left and continued with her practice.
