To Become a God

by Potens Est

Warning This fiction contains:
  • Profanity

In a far away world, a person's strength, durability, and other factors are determined by stats. These stats are controlled by levels. However, if you reach level 100 you can become a literal god. Unfortunately, this is a much harder task than it looks.

A young adventurer sets out into this world with dreams of becoming a god. This is a story of him and many others in their quests for power.

Wait, you're still here?
The synopsis is supposed to be over, why are you still here? Go on, scram. Read the book or something.

Honestly, what am I supposed to say here? Do I give a list of characters, because I'm sure you'd love to read about a spider, a demon, and a rapist. Maybe plot? Then again I just described it up there, what more do you want? Do you want me to say something about the guns, or the seduction powers, or the power of friendship/lack thereof? Surely you see something that makes you want to read this. Anything? Maybe you just want a nice little story to read, in which case can you just open the god damn book already?

Anyways that's it, end of the synopsis. Go read or something, that's what you're on the site for isn't it?

Not your usual LitRPG!

Reviewed at: Intermission: Home

This is one of those things you either love or hate. The synopsis makes this seem like a fairly standard fantasy LitRPG featuring a young man going on adventures while chasing his dreams. While that's sort of true, at least on the surface, it's anything but "standard." A more accurate description would be: "A bunch of goofballs do all sorts of wacky things in a fantasy world while a commentator throws liberal doses of sarcasm, references, and fourth wall breaks." It's like Konosuba on crack, if you can even imagine that.

If you came here expecting either an epic plot or a number-crunching power fantasy filled with exciting mechanics and grinding, you're in the wrong place. Though there's some semblance of a conflict slowly developing, so far the plot hasn't been all that important. Hell, the main character gets so absorbed in a sidequest he might've forgotten about his original goal entirely. I also barely pay attention to levels and stats, even though I read pretty much anything with RPG elements because of this.

So what's the appeal, then? To me, it's the relentless commitment to the absurd. The biggest contributor to this is the narrator, almost a character in the story. His comments will either annoy you to no end or make you cry with laughter. If you enjoyed Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you know that learning about the delightfully bizarre nature of the cosmos and its inhabitants is just as fun as following the main characters, if not more. It's the same with this story. Of course, there's room for criticism: the author sometimes overdoes it with the pop culture references and drags some jokes and tangents for way too long. There are also a few awkward sentences here and there, as well as grammar errors that could easily be fixed with a thorough revision.

The characters are all interesting in their own ways, each with amusing quirks and unique personalities. From the simple-minded and earnest Stercus to the estranged demon king Daemonium, all of them add an extra layer of insanity to the story. There's even a fairly heartwarming scene in a chapter that caught me completely off-guard and made Stercus feel more relatable. It's a sign that we can expect further character development and exploration in the future, though comedy is still the main focus. That said, there's a character whose "quirk" isn't zany or amusing at all, unless you happen to find sexual assault funny, so beware.

Overall, this story has a lot of potential but also a few flaws that prevent me from recommending this to everyone. If you're a comedy fan with some tolerance for offensive humor and countless asides, especially if you're into LitRPG, consider giving it a try.

An Interesting Read!

Reviewed at: Infiltration 4

This story has a thought-provoking concept, I've definitely never read a story such as this before. It was an enjoyable read, although some parts are little hard to follow and there are a some grammatical errors - but nothing so bad that it takes away from the story!

I can tell that the author cares deeply for this story as they have fleshed out a whole world with descriptive scenery and colourful language. The characters each have their own intriguing personalities with weird quirks and bizarre actions, not a fan of the sexual assault but to each their own.

There definitely is potential here, I hope the author keeps writing and improving their story :)

WTF is even going on?!

Reviewed at: Beginnings 1

Our world sucks? Really? At least we aren’t starving in the damn dirt anymore.

Please break up your paragraphs.

Please stop rambling. You throw in reverences to google, mediaeval Europe, standard fantasy worlds… please just purge this from your story. It would be better for it.

Instead of rambling on about how your world is apparently just like mediaeval Europe, just world build straight from the start.

The fight in Chap 2 was just bad. Why is the MC not mourning the death of his brother??

I still love your profile pic thou; the synopsis is spot on from what I can tell. But, could you give your chapters real titles instead of whatever arc you have plus a number?

WTF is even going on?
