Vainqueur the Dragon

by Void Herald

Original ONGOING Adventure Comedy Fantasy Satire Anti-Hero Lead LitRPG Multiple Lead Characters Non-Human lead Strong Lead

Vainqueur Knightsbane is your average dragon: a giant, fire-breathing lizard who loves to take naps on his golden hoard, kidnap princesses for fun, and make the life of adventurers miserable. Vainqueur's only pleasure in life is to watch his treasure get bigger, one coin at a time.

So when a would-be thief turned unwilling minion tells him about "classes," "levels," and "quests," Vainqueur wonders if maybe, just maybe, he should consider a career change.

After all, why bother hunting monsters for free when you can get paid for it?

It’s a unique premise, set in a classic world. It’s basically about a dragon who realizes, “Why be the end boss when you can be the one who kills the end boss.”

Hilarious Story with Great Premise

Reviewed at: 33: BFF

Vainqueur the Dragon is an extremely funny story with a unique and interesting premise.

The premise of the story is that a human thief in a fantasy world who happens to be reincarnated from Earth wakes up a dragon in a cave, and accidently allows it to discover the level and clss system of the world, which dragons had been exempt from prior to that point. The story then follows the misadventures of the two.

The strongest points of the story are the humor, style, and story choices. The humor is very well woven into the setting, dialogue, and character interactions. The humor is enchanced by some subversions of expectations and satirical takes on standard fantasy world elements.

The story has largely moved in a positive direction, advancing the plot while taking time for comedy and worldbuilding, and avoiding the pitfall of getting tied up in its own jokes.

The characters started off as very fun to follow but largely two-dimensional. However, the story has done a good job fleshing out the characters as it goes, and the characters have definitely become more complex and given further room to develop.

As this point in the story, I am confident in saying that this story has not made the same mistakes as so many of its kind do and never advancing beyond its initial gimmick. This story has had its plot organically develop in a great direction, and I can't wait to see where the author takes it.

I would strongly recommend this story.

Stands out from the pack -- as a Dragon should!

Reviewed at: 10: The Battle for Haudemer

Good adventure and comedy. I'm pleased to find this story. Highly enjoyable. One of the fictions on this site that I can unreservedly recommend to friends and family. I'm only ten chapters in, but I want to keep reading. It's not a chore to get through, unlike many I've tried on this site, and I've chuckled aloud several times while reading.

  • Unique twist on a tired genre
  • Entertaining and at times genuinely clever
  • Flows well and is easy to read
  • Fully fleshed out level and class system that's actually integrated into the world, rather than feeling like an add-on
  • Vainqueur!

  • Grammar and spelling trips up every once in a while
  • PoV is not very consistent; this may simply be my preference, but the story works best when it's limited omniscience, 3rd person
  • Character development is a bit trite/stale

this is not a joke. i do not have a 5 ton dragon who can melt steel beams with his breath looking over my shoulder. I am not a hostage. i do not need help. I DO NOT NEED HELP

welcome to the story of the second calamity of man. In this story, a dragon's human minion is extorted into making him rich beyond any of the other dragons. This human was never asked to be an isekai protagonist, but became one anyways because a sentient dice thought it would be funny to put a person who was evil on earth into a world who just overcame one calamity in a demon king, and now has a second one coming- the greatest of all dragons.

I don't think i've ever laughed so hard as i have over the all the things Victor has to go through. Seriously. you need to pick this up. It'll make your day a little brighter.

A wonderful story about what happens when a dragon is introduced to the System and the concept of being paid to kill and loot things. A few minor typos here and there. A fun, lighthearted read.

Bonus points for having a non-reincarnated dragon main character.

I haven't had so much fun reading a story in a long 6 months and this was good

Not really much of a review but if your looking for a good laf read this and so far I dont have many negatives to say about this only 1 and that is that the dragon is a little dim in the head

Just finished volume 1 and have to say that this story started strong, and only got better. I'm normally not the biggest fan of inhuman protagonists, but Vainqueur is an exception. The comedy hooked me early on, but the dynamic between Vainqueur and his Chief of Staff is what makes this story such a great read. Volume 1 is a comedy through and through, with stats and powerups in the background. Vainqueur is primarily focused on amassing wealth. However, as Vainqueur's intelligence and humility grows, so too does his ambition.

Vainqueur is a scaley scrooge, and is also fully convinced that dragons are immortal beings, with death being a 'birth defect.' But as he faces strong foes and suffers losses, both monetrily and in combat, he is forced to do something that few dragons have ever done--acknowledge his own mortality.

I hope volume 2 will be every bit as funny as volume 1 was, but I'm also interested to see Vainqueur's new drive in action, as he and Victor fight their way to godhood... Then proceed to ring every last baby coin from the gods, amassing the greatest horde in history!
