Vainqueur Knightsbane is your average dragon: a giant, fire-breathing lizard who loves to take naps on his golden hoard, kidnap princesses for fun, and make the life of adventurers miserable. Vainqueur's only pleasure in life is to watch his treasure get bigger, one coin at a time.
So when a would-be thief turned unwilling minion tells him about "classes," "levels," and "quests," Vainqueur wonders if maybe, just maybe, he should consider a career change.
After all, why bother hunting monsters for free when you can get paid for it?

To be honest, I put reading this off for a long time. However, after actually getting around to it, it's surprisingly good. The two main characters are radically different, with Vain being a VERY stereotypical dragon, and Vic being... Unusual for someone isekai'd. Both characters experiance a lot of growth, and it has plenty of humor.
One of my favourite royal road stories ever.
The premise is simple but the execution and humor elevate it to another level entirely.
Its so well planned out and theres rarely a joke or pun that isnt funny.
The characters are well fleshed out with their own quirks and their interactions are handled masterfully.
I wish i could forget this series so i could read it all over again
Sadly there are very few completes stories that were as as consistently good and fun as this one, and I am very glad I picked this story.
Plenty of "meta" jokes and just enought OP characters to keep things both interesting while not overdoing the drama.
Definitely a must read.
If you are fiending for that next great story on RoyalRoad and have not given this story a shot, shame on you!
It's a good novel, and the comedy lands really well at first... Then it just becomes annoying really annoying and as much as I liked Victor in the beginning, he has become a character with next to no change and is wierdly passive.
I put a lot of emphasys on a story pace, on whether or not the events happening make sense whitin the story and are reasonable with the current world building. I tend to be less strict when it has element of comedy and pop culture references, after all somethings are there to just make us laugh arent they? And thats where Vainqueur the Dragon enthraled me and made me its minion, because while it would have been fine if things were a bit more forced and rough(because you dont expect much with such heavy comedy, and silly gags) this novel was SMOOTH, almost too smooth for a fantasy parody, and it's world building to character development was pure gold.
The way that Victor is a massive man whore and horndog, but stills suffers the consequences of his actions and reflects on , but only start to really feel it when one of his biggest lies make one of his friends turn his back on him, and said friend never comes back until the end really sell that character growth
The events that take place make sense whitin the narrative, the characters are at the same time true to themselves and capable of change(something really hard to pull of), overall a great story, the Adventure&Fantasy element is good enough on its own, but when mixed with the Comedy it is like it turns from Lead to Gold.
English is not my first language, so i strugle with the grammar otherwise i could really sell it to you how great this novel is
I like it. Isn’t sure what else to say.... Meep!
Wow..I am honestly speechles. Vainqueur the Dragon is the first full story I read on RR. And I think there is no other that could top it. You gave me hours of pure joy reading it. From a young age I loved everything related to Dragons. I read all the books and watched all the films where there were even a little. I love games, both tabletop and pc, I do not disriminate. And in them I always find most fun in the "evil" clases even tho I myslef are not evil at all :) but necromances, udead in general and all kinds of monsters are all my favourites. So you can imagine how happy I was when I stumbled on your story. I basically searched best rated stories and hoped that there will be something in there for me, and boy there was. Your amazing story checks all my favs. And its comedy as a bonus! You created such a briliant world. And Vainqueur and Victor catapulted at the top of my favourite characters. I just cannot thank you enough for sharing their journey with us. I had such a blast. I cannot rememeber when I last lauged out loud when reading a book.
That reminds me will there be and option in the future to buy all of them in book format, paperback or hardback? I would love to have them in my library.
I am also so glad it ended with happyend. I am done with the "bittersweet" ending and subverted expectatios book and tv series autors adopt these days. I am sure I am repeating myself but I am on such a hype train because of this story, on one hand I am sad it ended but on the other I am so happy it ended like it did.
The only thing that I predicted that didn't happened was that Victor would turn into full dragon either by spell, perk or something. I would love to see Vainqueur thoughts on that. And not only because I am one of the small percentage of people (know that because of the poll :D ) who ships Victor and Vainqueur :D.
Anyway thank you a thousand times for this story. If there ever be some spinoff in Outermonde I will gladly join from the beginig. Take care! Nela
This was amazingly paced and the comedy was good from start to finish. The smaller details were brought up again and again and suprised me to the point where you'd think the author keeps a note of every single thing and references it every chapter. Overall an amazing read and the end was really damn good.
Enjoyed this story very much.
Vainqueur Knightsbane, First of his Name, Great Calamity of this Age and King of the Albain Mountains, simply known as Your Majesty to minions. That's with a capital Y and M, mind you, he can tell.
Victor Dalton, failed thief, reluctant Chief Of Staff and the other half of newly formed V&V Adventurer Company. Together they form a formidable team and Victor is safe as long as he can keep hiring more minions as backup rations.
Original and humourous read with decent pacing and new characters, creatures and concepts. Expect to be entertained!
It goes on for quite a bit, namely 153 chapters, so it is quite an epic.
