Charisse inched closer to the campfire ahead. Slowing her breathing, she froze in place to make sure the figure sitting by the fire hadn’t noticed her. Moving slowly behind a tree, she whispered, “Show me the map.”

The map suddenly filled her vision. A few odd or extremely big trees marked the area, the game trail going back to the glade, and the road going from Daletown to the unnamed town were marked. She estimated she was half a mile from her friend's camp.

Pushing the map from her mind, she peeked around the tree again; the figure was still sitting by the fire.

Charisse noticed a subtle nodding of his head. She stood, unmoving and watched. A sudden jerk of the guys head upwards, and then he glanced around as if suddenly scared. After examining his surroundings, William kicked dirt on the fire.

Faint moonlight illuminated Williams camp enough for Charisse to see him clear a small bit of ground and lay down. She watched his breathing become steady before moving back behind the tree and sitting down.

“I need the Player's Handbook,” Charisse whispered. The book appeared in front of her, and she read on the rules for combat. After what seemed like a minute of reading, she brushed the image away and opened her eyes to the night. She was still sitting at the tree and could gauge by the shadows she had been sitting there for a bit.

Slowly she stood up, trying not to make a sound.

When she was twenty feet away, she pulled out her bow and two arrows. Placing one in her hand with the bow, she notched the other and pulled back. Holding her breath, she released.

The arrow flew true. Striking the space between William's chin and chest, it pierced his throat. His eyes burst open as he coughed up blood. Quickly Charisse notched her second arrow and fired.

Before the arrow hit, Charisse dropped her bow and ran towards her target. The second arrow pinned William's hand to his chest as it struck near his collarbone. He rolled onto his back and tried to pull the arrow out of his neck. Charisse leapt on him with a dagger in her hand.

She swung down with her knife, but he threw an arm up and deflected her strike to the dirt. She pulled back and swung again,

As she was swinging down, William coughed and spat in her face. Phlem, blood, and saliva coated her eyes. She rolled off William on to the ground near him. She stopped on a patch of warm ground where the hot coals still smoldered under the dirt. She rolled a little bit further and and pushed herself up. She used her sleeve to wipe her face.

William had freed the hand that had an arrow through it. He had both hands gripping the arrow in his throat. Crack, he broke the shaft in half then pulled it out of his neck.

“Eep my,” William tried to speak, but the hole in his throat made talking difficult. He pulled a dagger out of his belt and pointed it towards Charisse. “Eave!” he waved the dagger towards the woods and away from him.

Charisse nodded and turned to the side,

… then turned back towards William, kicking the dirt in front of her. Digging her toes in, the heat threatened to burn through her leather shoes. As her foot came upwards, a pile of dirt and smoldering embers flew towards William. He threw his hands up to block the spray, and Charisse rushed back in.

William had long stopped moving. Charisse stood up, walked a few steps before throwing up. The mixture of vomit and blood on her clothing caused Charisse to shiver. She quickly removed the garments, went over to the small backpack Jax had given William, and rummaged through it.

She pulled out the cloak and a container of water. Using those, she washed as best she could and put on some spare clothing. Stuffing the blood soaked garments into William's bag, she headed back towards her friends. Along the way, she found a large bush and stuffed the backpack into it.

With the map, it only took her an hour to get back to camp. Mark sat, watching a smoldering fire as he watched, everyone else was asleep. Charisse snuck back into the camp.

Standing behind Mark, she quickly threw her hand over his mouth and pulled him towards her. With her other hand, she brandished her dagger. Mark’s muffled cries and struggles silenced when Charisse whispered into his ear, “Game over man,”

Removing her hand and taking a step back, she smiled at the glare Mark threw in her direction. She beckoned him away from the fire.

“The,” Mark yelled then lowered his voice, “fuck are you doing?”

“We were supposed to be keeping watch if I was an NPC I could have killed you and everyone else.”

“I was supposed to have someone to watch with me.”

“Yeah, I had to pee,”

Mark opened his mouth to speak, then stopped, clenched his jaw, “Todd and I know that isn’t true, but we don’t need to know what you were doing. Besides if we die, we’re back at the glen.”

“Even though I don’t remember any other times, I’m tired of the glen. It feels like we aren’t making any progress.”

“Yeah, we need to get some better gear and weapons. I’ve been reading about armor’s.” Mark said. Charisse’s jaw dropped open briefly to rebuke Mark. “I know, I’m only doing glimpses, a minute here and a minute there. Todd was up earlier, so I used that time to find the page numbers for Armor and Combat for quick access.”

“What did you find out?” Charisse said, biting her bottom lip a little.

“Each armor is part of a classification, Basic, Light, Medium, Heavy, and Divine. We keep dying because we have no armor. Each rank subtracts a success from the attack.”

“And this means?”

“Most creatures and monsters will have 3-5 dice to roll, with success being about 40% chance for each dice. So odds are most are hitting us with 1-3 successes. Being able to negate even one should reduce how often we get hit or how much damage we take.”

“I’ll look it up myself in the morning. How much longer on watch?”

“Maybe another hour,”

“Read up; I’ll keep watch, Jax is right, we need to exploit the fuck out of this system.”

“Yeah,” Mark turned to walk back towards the fire, after a couple of steps, he turned back towards Charisse. “You ok?”

“Yeah, I’m fine,”

“You want to talk about it?”

“Nothing to talk about, I can’t remember anything. My older sister was abused; it destroyed her. She dropped out of sports, stopped hanging with friends, and it wasn’t until the school call my parents about her grades before they realized there was a problem.”

“Alright,” Mark went back and sat near the fire. Once he stopped moving, Charisse turned away and started patrolling around the camp. As she slowly moved, she found a tree near her path, then threw her dagger at it.

Once she was standing next to the tree, she balled up her fist and punched it.

Failure! Physical roll 2d10; 2, 4. Zero Success; Skill Melee Weapon - Fists attempt failed.

Her hand glanced off the side of the tree, the bark scratching her pinky finger. She punched again,

Pulling out her dagger, she walked towards the next tree, repeating the same motions. Stealth, ranged, then melee, after the third tree she added a stab with the dagger. While she didn’t know how they were going to get out of this game, she was certain part of it is; practice, practice, practice.
