Jason wakes up in a mysterious world of magic and monsters. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters, and that’s just the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.
Follow Jason as he makes a place for himself in a world that is strange, yet sometimes strangely familiar. He’ll meet crime lords and aristocrats, gods and monsters on his path from would-be victim to heroic adventurer. At least, he tries to be heroic. It’s hard to be good when all your powers are evil.

The MC decides to find himself and then be himself when he is yoinked into a new world with magic and monsters. He grows over time in both strength and shows more of his personality as he grows stonger. Fighting scenes are well done, monsters are unique, setting is unique, story is excellent, characters are decently fleshed out and grow over time. All in all a good story that holds the attention and leaves you wanting more.
It's very good but it can become a littel much with the politics, but it's overall very good and i highly recomend it.
I have red the 430 chapters in 3 weeks, when my borther recomended it. so a good 9/10 story, I like the story and how it builds up over the chapters. Im a big fan of the way the storie unfolds, and the balenc of abilities and how strong they are.
I spotted this story one of my first days on the site but never started because everything beyond the first few chapters were on Amazon. Eventually, I tried the teaser chapters, and I'm glad I did. Unless you're completely allergic to Amazon's monopoly, it's worth paying for access to the stories, even if one only gets unlimited for a month. The story is that good!
How can a story go wrong when the character's first two primary goals are to stay alive and earn some pants (then a shirt)?
In addition to the humor, the protagonist is very lovable. He has the irreverence that Ausies and Kiwis uniquely channel. I particularly like the way he goes out of his way to befriend ordinary folk while tweaking the powerful. Very Au/Nz! I love his penchant for babbling what appears to be nonsense to the locals while making total sense to the reader.
Dialog and character interactions both add to the story. As a n00b Jason needs some hazing, and the other characters are happy to supply it for him. Then they go on and demonstrate true friendship through mentoring.
Grammar + spelling are not noticeable, which is kind of basic. The story is not literature, but mind candy need not have literary merit.
My main gripe with the story it the adolescent genre, where protagonists have neither a sex drive nor sexual motivation. While there’s no need to go into details, I find it strange for a healthy man in his 20’s to be devoid of sexuality.
Warmth. Humor. Action. Likeable characters. Can't go wrong with this one.
I've been reading HWFWM for a few months now and even became a patreon so I could get the most recent chapters delivered daily. There's a charm to Jason Asano and his evolving character that spans the breadth of emotion. I get to admire the character for being strong, vulnerable, defiant, arrogant, friendly, humble, quirky, funny...
Jason is the kind of guy who whips out a sandwich and shares a fruit punch with friends... all in the middle of a monster infested warzone, reminding us all that it's important to slow down every now and then and enjoy the journey. That strikes a chord with me. I hope it will with you too.
I love Jason's personality and the banter in this book is definitely SSS Ranked. I was introduced to the story through the first published book and then found this here and couldnt stop reading. Every day I'm tuning in at 7 my time for the latest hit of this literary crack.
The main character, Jason, reminds me of Hawkeye from the TV series MASH. He uses quips and comedy to distance himself from the occasionally horrific situation he finds himself in. Unlike Hawkeye, Jason is transported to a fantasy world so there is magic and amazing places to explore.
The series has good characters, a well developed plot, and multiple story arcs. Quite enjoyable!
I just wanted to say thankyou for the fun and engaging story! I found the books through Kindle and was so engaged by the first two books that I read the rest of the series here. Perfect timing because I was able to read up to the end of Volume 2 and now I'm supporting on Patreon because "the story must go on".
There are some negative reviews in here that are completely unfair. I feel like all character development in the story is done intentionally and not accidentally. What I'm trying to say is, keep up the great work and keep writing such a fun and engaging story. I look forward to the up and coming volumes.
Also, as an Australian, it was very refreshing to read an excellent story in which the main character just happens to be Australian.
Love this story and am on the road to catching up to the current set. I will update this when I get to the current releases. I love the magic system and the laugh-out-loud humor that happens when Jason happens to have someone make him mad. The villains are bad, the characters are important, and the story is awesome!
My first encounter with this fiction was in book form, Audible threw it at me and I consumed it. The first book made me want to learn the australian accent so that I could use it for any overpowered wizard ever.
He who fights with monsters hooked me on the first book, I didn't know the origins of this great story was here on Royalroad before the latest release on Audible and when I found out that there were as much of the story out on royalroad then I had to go through it.
It's a captivating story with pretty good litrpg elements. The characters we meet, both the good guys and the bad guys are pretty great and it was basically that which made me hooked.
I started out loving this story for the light-hearted comedy, and like Asano got dragged further and further into the conflicts I wasn't prepared for emotionally. There's a depth that I didn't expect when I started the audiobooks. The parallels between Asano's political efforts on earth, and what we've been experiencing in real life with the pandemic. Misinformation and corruption leading to confusion, frustration, anger and resignation. Shirtaloon, through Asano, articulated a lot of what I and others have been feeling in the face of a pandemic, all while writing a freakin' awesome story about an interdimensional ninja warlock, man of mystery.
