I really like that the author has kept up with the chapters in comparison to other authors on this site. The main divergence in this fanfiction is that instead of horror movies, the author throws them into anime, novels, video games, etc.
Another main divergence is that in the real world, people that have left gods dimension have made up their own factions which also makes it a bit interesting.
So the story is alright and the style of writing too, nothing really to pick on.
Grammar: Also decent, there are some errors in each chapter and can throw you off slightly sometimes. A proofreader would easily solve that though.
Character: This would be where the story struggles the most in my opinion and get's worse through the story. It got that japanese novel arrogant mc/harem syndrome vibe, but you can work around that. It's just that the characters come across as shallow and one dimensional, there's no real depth to any of them perhaps except for 1 or 2 if you stretch it. I would barely even miss any character if they died, and it might even bring some development for the other characters.
And the budding harem, the problem is that it detracts attention from the story & character development with each new member. It seems to go downhill with each new "sister-wife" as the author writes it. They come across as trophies or dolls in my eyes. Also the story seems more focused on the harem than the other characters which hurts the other characters.
One big thing for me is the stupid mistakes the characters make and keeps repeating even when you're responsible for others lives. In these moments I would still be okay with it it if a character goes completely dumb as long as they get to pay for their mistakes and learn from it. But no, all of the cast feel like they've got plot armour and basically nothing ever hurts them.
It also feels so incredibly artificial because it looks like the author want it to go a certain direction but can only resolve to this and takes it out on the characters. Plans and strategies can go wrong when you can't account for everything, use that(it's something the original did really well). However, don't regress the characters intelligence/development just because everything has to fit. I mean with the intelligence stat growing you would think there would be some development there.
Also the constant harassment of "otaku, disgusting, weebo, no life, etc" is getting veeery dull at this stage, even more now that other characters join in on it.
One last thing that detracts from the story is that it tries to be a bit of everything, horror, tragedy, comedy, romance, action/adventure, etc. It's spread out a bit thin and it feels like the author can't decide which way to go with the story(although it seems to go for more comedy/romance & action currently).
In the end, I still enjoy reading it even if I've got my issues with the character section. If you can skip that or even like that, then you'll enjoy it even more than me. I still will keep up with it the story and see where it develops.
I wanted to review this for a longtime and actually just kept procrastinating so now I forgot about the details, but here's what I was tempted to say :
Nimasaur's review pretty much summed up my view of this novel as a story, so I'll comment about the fanfiction's side.
(ATM I read up till start of HxH intermission arc, so there might be some spoilers for those that didn't read up to there yet)
Well, that's a decent read for sure, a good fanfiction when you see what people can do. I'd say it keeps people entertained, as an action-packed novel.
Saddeningly, it loses the original's "horror" side in the process, which is kinda amusing since the name is Terror Infinity.
Although it may be caused by the author's reliance on the original, the first mission in HOTD was probably the only one which had this bit of horror left in it, maybe along with the second one in BTOOOM!.
But maybe that was also because the reader didn't know yet about every single main character's plot armor.
I mean seriously dude, Misaki was Death-Flagged since min 1 (Not talking about the overkilling amount you added throughout the story; poor Misaki), and in the end, when you made him survive, what, 5 missions with the team ? His death's only purpose is to enrage Shin, whom he doesn't even know that much...
I mean, this best friend's death thing and all is great, but I simply can't feel anything seeing only Misaki's stupid dumbass hothead side...
Not like he and Shin were BFF anyway...
Yeah, and wtf is up with your power balance ? Not bothering speaking about... what's her name again? Kirasa ? Let's call her sword-waifu (I mean, this pretty much sums up her existence).
Well, sword-waifu's fight with Deadpool's guy ( there were so many reasons why he should have been stronger, even if his magic didn't - lol - do that much damage to sword-waifu), even the 20-men mission in Alice was fucked up - NOBODY DIED.
Yeah, right, 1 more sec and that was a wipe, alright, that's nice and all, but, dude, you do realize God couldn't predict (forgot his name yet again ^^) infiltrated bad guy's betrayal ? And it made them lose, like, 4 hours (forgot as well, but I'm pretty sure it was hours anyway) waiting for Shin to wake up ? So tell me - where is it ? The 20-men sure wipe everyone fears so much ? Just find NPCs and ez game ez life ? And I'm not taking account of the fact theis should have been a sure wipe for 20 men of Aqua's level... (I mean, in the original, it is ascertained that the difficulty of god's missions were standardized to the strongest team member's level enhancementwise and... enhancements are almost the only things Aqua has.)
Uh... I kinda lost where I was going now...
Well guess I should say that now then : I'm only talking about the bad things right now and not the good ones since that's pretty much what you can expect of life - picking up your mistakes and ignoring your good deeds.
And I do (most of the time anyway - I mean, there are moments you really trigger me) enjoy this read.
As an action-filled light-hearted terror infinity anyway. And maybe this styke suits better animes, so it may be fine.
Oh and I hate theatre-style in novels. Well that's my tastes though so I won't take it into account for my score.
Right, before I finish this, just gotta say that I feel like you're messing up with Shin's power levels. Some times he's stronger than he should be and, well, gotta say plot armor anime and all so it isn't that bad, but mostly, he's weaker (or at least I feel so), I mean, he's the soon-to-be over powered main character that gets high scores in every mission, and still struggles against small fries were Connor easily takes care of enemies' second strongest member after a single mission ? (Speaking about HxH here) I get he's a child soldier who unlocked constraint and had bloodlines or whatever but still, that's a bit forced.
I'll just stop here since I'd most likely continue for an unhealthy amount of time if I was to list every single little thing.
And I guess I forgot big ones, but well.
All in all, as a fanfiction, it greatly differs from the original not in the idea, but in the style, which I guess is why I saw some people loving your story but disliking the original.
I'll rapidly say what I liked though, since I guess it'll mltivqte you or something :
-Good going on the four pillars, spices things up, increase story's potential and all, don't forget to bring some twists in to show they aren't completely dumb.
-Style, but I already explained.
-Fights, nicely done. Though MC does lots of mistakes which should be understandable and welcome since he's human, but a bit unsettling when he's under genetic constraint, which unlocks battle instincts.
-Derrick - was it ? Oh no, this one was infiltrated bad guy, remembered him at last, just too lazy to edit. No, I meant the NPCs getting the watch and allowing players to buy in mission, didn't specially like that part but it's always good to see new things, you know. Missions tends to be boring when you can guess everything that'll happen - one of the problems of overly present plot armor.
You'll greatly surprise me if you ever kill one of Shin's waifu. Even so I'd probably think you were gonna resurect her but still. I can't shake off the feeling that being MC's girl gives you plot armor. Get him to fall in love with ennemy team's girl or something, it'll spice up the boring romance/harem seriously, and God knows it needs it.
Yeah, as I said I always lose myself and will never finish.
Among the fan fictions i love reading that still continue updating regularly, this has been the one I liked best due to the ever evolving storylines and the ever looming threat that each ark brings in the progression. The goals that each character strive for and the ever present threat of death driving everyone to grow stronger each mission really makes this worth reading.
As an editor, I really like editing this novel and if possible I will make sure I bring out the best quality I can for all to enjoy.
I like the story so far, and I would love to continue reading it, but Shin is getting too annoying Sure he is geting stronger, and he is taking the life and death situations seriously, both his own, and more importantly, his comrades. He is mature enough to trust them to their own battles, but still worries. But I don`t see him maturing much. The part where he told the kids that he can`t judge their choice about wanting revenge for their parents (considering the situation they and he are in, and not about in real life), is a great example of maturity, but every time I next read his ``ultimate protagonist`` ``harem`tangents amd whatnot, I go do something else for a cpl hours before coming back to reading. He should have matured out of that three arcs ago. Or at the very least, gradually gotten less an idiot until the last arc. Now, if he doesn`t stop being an idiot, I don`t know if I will stay with it or not. another arc or two will tell
Author did his research with skills and various stories that he chose for the missions.
Well written when the author writes in first person.
Grammar is passable with the proofreaders but still contain many simple mistakes like your/you're and their/there/they're.
Author made a really interesting spin on why God's Dimension has changed from the original and avoided something that imo made team Devil retarded.
Too much telling breaking the show don't tell "rule" especially when using narration. It's a very lazy way to write and breaks any immersion by making it hard to take the story seriously. This is made worse by the author using parenthesis() as a crutch to write. An example of this would be "Hikari and I quickly pushed through the hectic mad rush of students to reach the administration building. While holding on to Hikari's hand ( Her face flushed red, so she must not be used to male contact )"
Forced character decisions because the author wants the story to go a certain way despite it being completely unnatural. Happens multiple times, especially to the main character. This is very frustrating and honestly insulting as a reader. Instead of making the enemies tougher and letting the MC act naturally, the MC will repeatedly make similar mistakes and not learn from it because otherwise the enemies will seem too easy. This also includes spending points in a less than optimal way and ignoring free ways to get stronger. An example would be at one point in the story our MC has two enemies that he can kill right then and there, instead he goes full retard and delays killing them which results in the enemy saving both of them. This wouldn't be so bad if it weren't so unnaturally executed and if our MC hadn't already twice made the resolution to not go easy and kill his enemies.
Shallow characters. Most of the characters appear to be very shallow which is made even worse when the forced decisions happen due to "plot". The harem does not make this any better. The number of times the MC makes a resolution only to repeat the same decisions again and again.
Someone else mentioned this but the constant abuse of the main character with random derogatory terms gets old very fast.
The absolute lack of terror/horror in the stories is very disappointing for me personally. I was hoping for more zombies/mutants, ghost/demons and things like terraformers for the action. HxH, Btooom and DRAE were very meh for story choices.
Despite all this, the charm of a decently written Terror Infinity is enough for me to read it.
R U alive?? I want more!!!!!
This fanfic has been frozen for a long time so I am reviewing in hope that it would revive, author-san r u alive?? I don't know if it was stopped because of some bad reviews, or writer's block, but I want more!!!!! I really like this fib and I know people (more than 10 which is big because I only have friends in single digits number) who love this fic and many of us are waiting for return
In my opinion this fan fiction is really great. You try to go into detail with every step. Sometimes a bit flat and maybe not 100% keeping the line all the time but that is to be expected of fan fictions and it definitely is better than many others i read.
I really love how you work on the arcs. I mean who would think about a story in HotD where the main charackters friend is still alive and one of his main traits never develop and Team Japan has to deal with it? Really nice idea on how you expanded the story and thought kinda behind the scenes to make it more authentic.
The increased danger level for was kinda hard in that one but the whole story changed so it was ok with the things explained meanwhile.
Arc 2 was really great too, i havent heared of BTOOOM! before and still have to do that but even without knowing the story there was nothing i didn't understand. Really like how you managed to make a story about their survival although a lacking part of that arc is that there was no real danger in case of the NPC BTOOOM! players. Everything else was nice.
Really like the real world part too although Shin kinda behaves weird in sometimes but it's just one of the crazy main characters we all learn to love so maybe sometimes make his behaviour a bit smoother may be cool but not necesarry. Im really happy that this is not one of those stories where the characters just go do things without thinking about it and that they really have to train to get their skills up. Though I'm really sad that Saki died but it really fit into the story, but we can be sad right? xD
The system with weapons/modifications etc. is great too although being able to mass produce better items with so little points seems kinda too much. If it is not as expensive as the complete one i think it is really ok but here i think you overdid it a bit with all those things that saki was able to do. Just feels too much for me.
I am really looking forward to the effects of multiple modifications/mutations of ones body. If i rememver right you had the concept of those allowing each other or canceliing on another out or even bringing bad effects to the body (extreme case death). Maybe I understood it wrong but it didnt seem to be able to have some of all of these effects. For example if one had mana and the ghoul modifications. Something like being able to fuse the blood skills with something like a fireball if one uses the mana within that blood skill (mana in blood if the concept is that mana is everywhere) but at the same time cant use their own mana to channel spells otherwise because it is bound in the blood and the ghould mutation is stronger than the mana one.
Just some random thought of me though. If something of my review seems weird I never really read Terror Infinity but plan to do so in the future and furthermore anything that has to do with mana is already a thing i analize in ever fanfic etc. i read because i really like thinking about the concept of mana in another world and make a really logical one :P I guess my mana rantrings are unlogical though,,,
Anyways hope this will go really really far and you keep on doing a great job as always :P
Basically, I remember this being a great story, with bad grammar or editors that didn't do their job.
This story was also a great help to me, actually explained to me some things or concepts I didn't know or understand in a number of the Anime and Manga referenced in this.
I love the infinity genre, and this work is a quite fun addition to it. The original characters and fun interactions really pull through, and the use of quite unusual and lesser known manga and animes is fun also. Hopefully not too much spoiler, but its fun that HunterXHunter is used, and it was fun learning about btoooom. Only wish one piece ended up being selected also, but highely recommend this novel.
Even though its gone on hiatus, its still a huge lengthy book with a relatively satisfying stopping point. I hope the author will make another chapter to update fans on the progress on his original work at some point, otherwise we may miss it.
Let's just start by saying that I have read a reasonable share of English made or translated Japanese/Chinese novels or novels with anime/mange elements. If you've done the same, you know that having low expectations is a must, to not go insane after some of the more cringy works.
Style/Grammar - The biggest problem I usually have is the insertion of Japanese/Chinese terms in every sentence. Author/translator even usually goes out of the way to explain that there is no English equivalent. They are wrong. You can find the proof in a multitude of 5-star novels that don't do the same. Occasional Onii-chan, Baka, etc. is fine, but if I have to have a dictionary with me, just to read your novel, you are doing it wrong. This novel found a good middle ground. There are parts where such things are found, but those parts are mostly used jokingly or for fun factor.
Grammar tends to be just fine, but the occasional mistake can be found. They mostly stem from accidental forgivable mistakes rather than the wrong use of the term. The important part is that grammar doesn't interfere with reading and stories enjoyment. With a little bit of proof-reading, it could go to 4.5-5 stars. Still, as someone who re-read his own novel 50 times and still finds grammar mistakes every time, I know that the struggle is real.
Story - This is where most fanfictions should shine. You take the setting and make the characters do more. However, good fanfictions, take the concept and build upon it. They don't stick to already known things or already know characters, but use them as world explorers and introduce brand new characters. This novel is really good at it. I can't say more about the novel, without spoiling it. However, I must say that the parts I thought would be boring because I have not read/watched the particular manga/anime. Turned out fantastic and enjoyable. That's a great skill for an author to have.
Characters - Mostly likeable. There are some logical inconsistencies, here and there with their reasoning, but I'll write it down to them, not thinking carefully enough about things. Not to say that they are stupid, it's just that their choices are not always to correct or optimal ones. The character interactions and often funny and I did start to care about some of the characters as time went on. There is one character whom I started caring for that came as a surprise. I had not played that game before and didn't know about her. Still, the emotions she felt, felt real to me. That's all I can say without spoiling too much.
World - I have a personal dislike of few God's world rules and their logical inconsistencies, but I'm guessing that this will be worked upon in future. They don't really subtract that much from story enjoyment and are more like my own pet peeves.
The story is solid 81/100. I hate the 5-star system.
