Braytons Barracks. An institute created to train the strongest of knights. Monsters who defeat monsters. Join the members of Grimstone Squad as they navigate their way through classes, missions, and the mystery of a powerful sword with a tragic past.

Book One - Chosen by the Blade

Sybil Twist has followed her mentor's lead and has applied to join Braytons Barracks. Before she can even think of becoming a squire, she and her friends are going to have to pass the entrance exams.

Book Two - Martyr of the Mist

The Guilded Region is greeted by the beginnings of a miasma plague, bringing with it horrific beasts mutated by its curse. A surprise inspection by the Duchess of Violet unveils secrets Alton would rather keep hidden. Veximarl is tossed into the fires of captainship while his squadmates struggle with making new friends, avoiding Stonetoe's wrath and falling in love.

Book Three - Stone Cages - Ongoing

Sybil is still focused on trapping the ancient god, Tyrtain, within a golem. Before she could proceed, a kidnapping plot sends the knights of the barracks scattering to make a rescue. Alton and Veximarl are faced with a dire decision. Save their friend and risk destroying the Gilded Region or let the knights do their job. Even if they can save the day, they still have to prep for their first real mission. Travel home to Carapace and do whatever they can to save a miasma stricken city.

Book Four - Tainted Carapace

The city of Carapace is plagued with issues. Most of all is the noble class, who ignores the plights of the Crimson Region in favor of keeping themselves safe. Grimstone Squad is split among different tasks, each doing their best to stop the tainted beasts and political issues that scar the city.

Well written, interesting world and characters

Good story so far. Excellent grammar, interesting plot, intriguing characters and world building. You get enough info to know what's going on, but enough mystery to be hungry for more.

Tagged for "school life", but this is definitely not some high school drama or Hogwarts knockoff. School trains squires to be knights, so everyone is a competent fighter and magic is just a thing that some of them can do.

Only quibble is that sometimes the POV changes without warning and you don't realize it until halfway through the paragraph. A break or header would help with the flow.

Bottom line, interesting fantasy story that I'm eager to see continue to develop. Give it a read.

Goosebump fantasy

A quick and short review at book 2 chapter 8

I do not understand how this story is not in the top 10 on this website because it is simply awesome.

This story gives me the same feeling of mystery and wonder as Wheel Of Time series.

The world building is wonderful and interesting.

Every single characters are alive and have different personalities.

Grammar is almost perfect, I think I found only 5 mistakes within 20 chapters.

The bad

I hate Alton, I hate him so much that I want to rip him out of the text and throw him in to a Iron maiden wearing a Heretics fork so he wont talk back while I lecture him on person space

Light days in a dark world

Very good story, amazing world building, believable characters and great grammar. Whilst reading there is always more depth behind everything and you want to know whats going on for what reason. Every answer gives you new questions and adds to the mystery.

Style: The story reads very pleasantly, switching between the light moments of school and the darker moments of peril and challenges.

Story: The story starts off nice and shallow, the usual group of friends going to school to become adventurers and make better lifes for themselves. At first everything seems in order and the reader can follow the obvious first problems that arise and their consequences. All the while there are small tibbits of information that seem inconsequental at first, but are well placed foreshadowing for further developments or additional depth for the world. The worldbuilding is very well thought through, there are no conflicts and every small thing from the earlier chapters gets put into a bigger whole with new perspectives and angles.

Grammar: The grammar and spelling is very good, very few mistakes.

Character: The characters are very believable and flawed. They start off as the usual stereotype for their position, but they do have flaws that are revealed later in the story that makes them more realistic and relatable. Their emotions and actions are logical and there is a notable character development.
