In the war-torn land of Cyraveil, four heroes strove to overthrow an empire. By cold steel and elemental sorcery, they brought peace to a warring land on the brink of destruction. As the flames died, the realm needed strong leadership, and who better than the champions who had saved the kingdom? But when the people sought out their saviors... they vanished.

Matt, Blake, Jen, and Carl: the four mysterious companions, who together had deposed an insane ruler and saved countless lives, were gone—spirited back in a whirlwind of magic to a sleepy suburb in Mellbridge, Oregon, never to return. The friends found themselves home in the real world, exactly as they'd been the night they were taken, as if no time had passed... except only three came back.

Hi there! This was my entry for National Novel Writing Month, because why only write one series at a time? The more the merrier! (meanwhile, my keyboard bursts into flames...)

I'm also the writer of The Last Science, an ongoing low-fantasy/speculative sci-fi series. If you're familiar with that, you know what to expect here: lots of character-focused drama and dialogue, not a whole lot of traditional action. However, I'm writing a bit differently than usual here, and in a very different structure, so there should be some surprises for returning readers. I hope you enjoy it!

Cover art (fullsize): Path of Revelation, by taenaron (Tobias Roetsch), modified by Etzoli. Normally I like to do my own cover art from scratch, but I was in a rush for the contest. Might be replaced down the line if I get time.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Other reviews have said it all. Highly recommend. Really captures what coming back could be like

Brilliant story following three teens after their return from a land of magic and warfare.

This story is of much higher quality than I was expecting. Being a step removed from the action of Cyraveil, the story has the chance to explore themes of character, and consequence.

Epilogue overall has a much slower pace than most other stories on royalroad, and has more suspense.

Overall, this is an entertaining and thoughtful story. We'll worth your time.

Thank you Etzoli for the wonderful  work.

Definitely got way too emotional reading this. Didn't help that I bothered the author the entire time while reading it. If the description interests you I 100% recommend giving this a read, since it's a relatively short read.

Hauntingly beautiful

I'm not usually one to leave a review but I loved this story so much that I just had to.  This incredible story makes me think of the Chronicles of Narnia in the last battle when the original 3 children were asked what happened to Susan.  This is exactly the kind of story that would have happened in the moments inbetween when they were left in the real world before returning once more.  Like the best of stories this one left me satisfied yet yearning for more.

Black and white concepts like hero and villain are gone out the window. Despite being short there is sufficient background to make it interesting end let your imagination roam. Satisfying ending brings closure.

Looking forward to other completed stories by Etzoli!

This story is hard.

This story is crazy.  I am blown away by the characters, they are real.  They come back from a fantasy world and they are messed up.  If you read a lot of isekai stories, they never really cover the cost to the characters for what they have done.  This story is pretty much a possible epilogue to any isekai story.  I wish as I read this that the characters weren't so broken, that they could protect each other, however, the way the story ends is fitting.

This story doens't leave you full of hope or optomistic for the future but it does leave you will a feeling that this could be real.

Fillory and Narnia Afterwards

If you've read Narnia and watched The Magicians. You'll get a good ride out of this short.

If you've ever wondered..."Can life go on after coming back from that 'other' place?" - Give this a read to see a possible glimpse of it.

This short will be entertaining and at times will shock you. It will also remind you that being human is all you can be. It can be harsh and beautiful.

Best of luck. And welcome to Narnia/Fillory/Cyraveil....please don't mind the lion or that odd wardrobe...

Something Different

Something different, emotional, an impossible background and a real setting making perfect sense. Objectively fantastic, probably subjectively too. I feel unsure, but that’s probably a good thing. A rare 5 star rating.
