Mother of Learning

by nobody103

Original COMPLETED Adventure Fantasy Mystery Magic

Zorian is a teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. He is a driven and irritable young man, consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, whom he resents for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, he has no time for pointless distractions or paying attention to other people's problems. As it happens, time is something he is about to get plenty of. On the eve of the Cyoria's annual summer festival, he is killed and brought back to the beginning of the month, just before he was about to take a train to Cyoria. Suddenly trapped in a time loop with no clear end or exit, Zorian will have to look both within and without to unravel the mystery before him. And he does have to unravel it, for the time loop hadn't been made for his sake and dangers lurk everywhere... Repetition is the mother of learning, but Zorian will have to first make sure he survives to try again - in a world of magic, even a time traveler isn't safe from those who wish him ill.

If anyone is interested, I have a story-related worldbuilding site that can be found here. I don't update it as often as I should, but there is a fair amount of content there already. It also contains a page with all the fanart, fan translations, audio books and the like - you can reach it directly by clicking this link.

I have a patreon account for those kind people that want to give me money. It also contains info for those who want to donate via paypal.

The story was originally posted on fictionpress, back in 2011. When I reached chapter 91, I started uploading the story to RoyalRoad, one chapter per day. The story will continue to be updated on fictionpress as well as here, and can be reached by clicking on this link if somebody is interested, though at this point there is nothing there that isn't also on RoyalRoad.

The cover you see on the side has been made by a fellow RoyalRoad user Sydorow. Thank you for your time and art skills.

Best book I have ever read

first of all on fictionpress there is over 90 chapters already written.
I don't want to spoil anything, so I will keep it simple. Characters are really well written, believable, realistic. Writing style  is good, it is well paced but informative. Author clearly has some epic ending in mind, so don't expect never ending repetetive chapters.
What I like the most in this story is that laws of magic(and everything else) sounds logical enaugh, no magic pooping out of nowhere to save mc, everything has rules.
So anyway, perfect book, everything is thought out. You must read it.

I have looked for this for a couple months since I read all available chapters and then lost the address. I never found it again. Finally it is here on my favourite site and right at the top where it belongs. So awesome. I love this story so much. Must read.

I've been reading this for years.

Not surprised it instantly jumped to the top page. There are a couple pacing issues here and there, but overall it's amazing. Foreshadowing Dozens of chapters in advance, character development for almost everyone, even some characters that seem like one-note antagonists at first. Unlike most time-loop stories, it actually has a long-term plot in mind.

I am glad to be alive and getting to read this!

I almost never leave a comment here but this story deserves waking my lazy ass up in the morning to write one down. This story has the best plot and story line ever created for a sci-fi web novel and the best story I've had the pleasure to read. The characters feel alive and the story always keeps you wanting more with its gripping action moments and interesting world building. If there's one book that anyone should read in their life I believe this is the one. Now stop reading about it whether it's worth it or not and just read it. Enjoy the ride while it lasts because when it will end you'll definitely be left wanting more. Unfortunately there is no way for us to go back in time.

Story you would love to experience all over again.

Great prose, interesting characters and plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. What's more, it's one of the few titles that are really without any plotholes - everything works together perfectly. No wonders it's one of the staple rational stories. Wonderful stuff :)

Need to properly reread this again, but it's good.

I check chapter 1 and it seems to be right with what I remember. This is a story of regular joe in Groundhog Day scenario in fantasy world. He doesn't have the smart, the muscle or the connection. He just have a lot of time. If that were not enough, he is not the MC of Groundhog Day. He's just a tagalong. He can't control when the reset go, since it's not about him.

It's great, it's suspenseful, it's takes time to digest. Take your time reading it and you might add this to one of your pleasant memory.
