Shitty MC in a cool setting.

Long review, so buckle up.

🌟 Well written. Cool characters, good plot.

🚫Intolerable hypocritical MC.   Can't bring myself to read the guy's delusional thought processes anymore. So, had to drop it at chapter 5. For my own sanity.

[Edit:The contents in brackets were added later since there's some misunderstanding about why some of us can't relate to the actions of the MC in the starting chaps.

Let me begin by asking a few questions : If a STRANGER took you hostage by tricking you, threatening to kill you, would you be able to trust anything they say? Would you believe them if they say that it was for your own good? Would you forgive them just a few moments after they've released you?

Now imagine if you remembered that you had been taken hostage only yesterday by someone evil! And that this is the second time this is happening to you, what are the chances that you would actually believe the person who has taken you hostage now?

Scary situation right?

Let's take it a bit further to explain its relevance to the story:

Spoiler :

Replace being taken hostage with being mind controlled twice in 2 days. Thrice if you count the part where the MC gets mind controlled as a joke.

So, Final question : Would you be able to ever trust that person and go on to defend/hide them from the Police, considering that mind control is Illegal which makes the controller a Criminal?

Yes, that's what the MC does. No, I cannot relate to this MC because that's not how people deal with life impacting/traumatic events.

An argument can be made that the MC is a rational fellow and quite mature for his age, thus able to see different viewpoints. But it collapses immediately because no future actions are taken similarly, MC doesn't spend 2 seconds thinking about others (their motivations or reasoning) when making judgements. He acts like a naive but rebellious 12-15 yr old rich kid who's driven only by emotional impulses and not reasoning.

See below(original review) for examples.],

Spoiler : Author repeatedly mentions that motive is important to MC(even when mind mage messes with his brain and tells him that the geas will kill him if he tells anyone. Guess what MC does when the geas is lifted? He takes the mind mage's side because she was just trying to 'help'.) When other parties use coercion for the greater good, suddenly he seems against them. Motive no longer matters.?! [He's aware of the double standards btw but still continues acting like this ]

When his sister is worried that he's being mind controlled, he flat out acts like an asshole. [Makes her out to be a villain messing up his life, as if she isn't literally worried about his brain] Motive doesn't seem to be a priority when his own family is considered eh?

Goes on to say that he doesn't care that laws were broken( since it benefited him)

Sister tries to bring in a 3rd party [The police basically] to check for mind tampering? He blames her for trying to bring down his chances at becoming a great mage.

Sister confesses that she hasn't joined uni because HIS chances of getting in are non-existent? That she chose to keep him company?
He bitches about how he's the victim... No shits given how she cared enough to stay by his side.

Honestly the sister character is great. Wish she were the MC.

Mc tries to make a geas sound like a taboo repeatedly but still doesn't seem to mind the fact that he is siding to protect the criminal who put a geas on him in the first place.

Oh and he keeps using his power to influence other people's emotions as if that's his right or even justified because... Well 'motive', i guess.

[Maybe they all make peace and have a happily ever after in the end, but upto this point, chap 5, the MC was an unrelatable character and thus just not worth it for me.

To those who liked it/stuck around for other reasons: To each their own. ]

2.5/5 Will not recommend.

I am so goddamn disappointed that the author dropped this story because God asked him to give up everything and become part of a cult. I had such high expectations of this author and story, but I can't give this story a higher rating than 1 star because of the stupid reason the story got dropped. You can call me petty for this, but I am honestly pissed because of this.

While this a good read, there is one thing I'd like to mention. The apparent (emotional) age of the mc feels inconsistent.  In the beginning, he acts like an 18-year-old.  Then comes the immaturity, and he looks to be around 16 years old.  By the 12th chapter or so, the emotional instability combined with people looking down on him makes him feel like a 10 to 13-year-old.  I know this is part of the storyline, but a little reinforcement of the fact that he is actually going into the equivalent of college would be a very welcome addition.  Furthermore, I believe a bit more maturity would not hurt the emotional portion of the plot at all.

Overall score: 4 stars: A good magic/fantasy novel with a rather realistic combination of medieval and futuristic settings.

Style score: 4 stars: Enjoyable flow.  A downside would be the importance placed on terms and alternate terms.  There was a little excessive repetition here and there, but nothing serious.

Story score: 4 stars: See Overall score

Grammar score: 4 stars: Almost impeccable grammar.  There were two instances of "you're" being used in the place of "your."  Possibly others, as I read very quickly.

Character score: 3.5 stars: See the big wall of text up at the top.

Notes: 4 stars is as high as I am willing to go without a "perfect" novel, so please forgive the rather low ratings.  Chapters are rather long, so keep that in mind.

A new contender for the first page

UPDATE / 14th of August 2018. Leaving this 5 start review in the hope that new autors look at this for a cue on how to start a story.

But I'm so pissed at the author for being such a troll...

......

Thislew my mind. Top tier stuff for this website and just in general. Not just a superhero novel.

Style 5/5

The writing style is really clean and just overall enjoyable. Good control, good chapter length, just the right touches of exposition vs dialogue vs narration...

Story 5/5

Let's be clear, it's not ground breaking but you've got a clear world, and use the characters properly to advance the plot in a believable way. Recognizable tropes from a few sources, but enough uniqueness to feel unique. Very good control of pacing.

Grammar 5/5

Blitz through it and found no typos at all, and can count one or two very small mistakes. Great vocabulary, sentence structure, etc...

Characters 5/5

The real surprise here, lots of novels on this site can't get that right at all. Here we already have a bunch of strong characters, some more open, some more mystical, but they show up often enough that you remember them all and can place them in the greater picture. They all advance the plot and are naturally acting. Even the more annoying ones... Make sense.

Overall 5/5

I'm following the shit out of this. I usually tear everyone a new one in my reviews but I genuinely think there's something for everyone in this.

Even with the uninspired title.

Extremely enjoyable universe

I rarelly ever do reviews, but this one deserved it. Excelent world building, with lots of particular aspects carefully explained, the characters have diferent and well-defined personalities, the grammar is excelent and the MC isn't outright overpowered, although his circumstances give him a very unexpected edge in this universe.

Even though it's still on chapter 14, I can see this universe has immense potential, and the author has lived up to it so far.

Although it was dropped, I still enjoyed it.

I think my time was well spend reading this book. In my opinion not every book needs to be finished, the thing that matters the most is that you enjoy reading it.

Someone once said the way is the goal, and I would add to that that as long as the way is an enjoyable one, then it does not matter whether or not it is an incomplete or a complete way just like this story.

I liked the way magic works in the book and I liked the the way the reasonings of the characters and world seemed actually reasonable most of the time.

As for the author turning crazy and dropping the story, well that just how it is if you can't deal with it or belong to the faction that is without hope that he was telling a bad joke, then better not read it.

But if still have hope that he might come back or are fine with enjoying 300+ pages of a high quality story then just give it a try.

Hypocritical mc , confused author.

After chapter 5, I'm fairly convinced the author has no direction on who the mc is supposed to be, it's like two different people are writing the same character and they both don't know each other pov on the mcs personality..one minute he is all : mind control and geas are evil, the next moment he's thanking someone for putting a geas on him because she says it was to " help" him?..even after she says it would kill him if he reveals it to anyone..excuse me ma'am?☝️how are you trying to help by killing me please?..let's not get to the part where he is a complete asshole to the sister that is actually trying to help him and care for him..lol..I'm just tired😥.

The only way this story gets better is if the mc dies and sister takes over, won't recommend to anyone, but you're entitled to make your own judgement, read at your risk.

Just read it, do it.

One of the most enjoyable stories I've been reading on royalroad.

Chapter length is thankful very generous and the quality is what I'd expect from a novel I'd pay money for.

Can't recommend this enough.
