Story that look good, but taste terrible

Review => Vol.4-Growth-Chapter 51 (1150 pages)

I am highly disppointed in this story. The tags are misleading.

Action ? Adventure ? It should be Slice of BORING life.

We are 1150 pages in and still 0 plot, i'm not joking.

I will use a quote of @ArtNJ to resume this novel so far

"Its a crafting story. But is it a crafting story with *zero* overall plot? If that had been in the description, never would have taken the plunge. With no plot, the story is like vanilla ice cream. Pleasant. But if that is all you eat every day, it starts to get sickening after a while."

Better read again The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor atleast it was fun sometime and author tried to add the IRL life too.

ONE chapter of wandering inn got me more excited about crafting/forging than 1150 pages of AoG

Holy cow this story is boring.

Thomas does this, then he goes there and does that. Then Thomas logs out and googles blueprints for a gun and copies it exactly to recreate in the game. Thomas has a couple issues but they don't really matter because of reasons.

This story while fine grammatically and with decent diction has no plot. There's no overarching quest or burning need. There's no passion in any of his actions. Thomas also comes off as wooden and aloof. He has no friends other than the NPCs training him and he doesn't form friendships with human players. He doesn't even seem to have a life outside of VR.

If you like long training montages with numbers and cliched ideas this story is for you.

I only got two chapters into it. The grammar isn't great, but whatever, it's a free RR story and I could read it. There were so many glaring errors that I couldn't read any further.

The main character is boring, his life story is literally: "I have nothing. No friends, no family, no job, nothing that ties me strongly to anything." He is described as being a 'master crafter' that the company asked for help to develop the crafting system in their game years before. But doesn't talk about any of the games he played or why he left, or what he did that made him good.

Then they introduce the game, which had a media blackout concerning it's release. Still it manages to sell preorders. Based on... what? There is no other mention of anything else the company has done, just, "Hey, new game. Super expensive. We can't tell you anything about it." When he does get into the game, rather than some sort of content hook, a cinematic or anything of the sort, he gets a warning that he will be permanently banned if he purposefully, indirectly or accidentally tells the NPCs that they are NPCs. Right there, the game is done. They will lose all their player base within a week.

There might be some good content later on when he actually gets into the game, but with so flawed a foundation I can't imagine this book being worth reading in it's current form.

Boring, shallow and selfabsorbed

I made it to v3c9. I'm not sure how though when there simply was no reason to read passed the second chapter. There is only one character in this story, and he's not very interesting. There is no challenge or tension in anything that happens. Everything is basically handed to the MC on a silver platter without him having to do much to get it. And while almost every chapter focuses on him crafting, it all feels shallow and boring. We're never given a reason to care about the crafting, or anything else for that matter. I don't know why I wasted so much time on this story, but you shouldn't.

The start to what I hope will be a massive story.

The story to this point is both intreging and we'll thought out, with the MC having a very distinct personality and goals. I enjoy the fact that the MC doesn't always do the obvious (to the reader) but has his own personality and preference on how to do things.

I also enjoy the fact that when he can, he chooses to put in his own effort and time to complete a task instead of spamming his ability, but is still willing to use his ability when he needs to.

RRL has few stories in which one can simply immerse oneself without periodic screeches of dismay from the inner grammar nazi. To the reader’s delight, Age of Gods is high quality writing both technically and in storytelling flair.

For a change, the protagonist is not doing the hero thing and saving the world from demons, for which mercy we should all give the author a round of applause. Quite fresh, too, is the emphasis on crafting details, adding depth one seldom encounters in the typical litrpg fare.

I rate this story right up there, together with my favourites (for example, Arcane Emperor), although the style is quite different, the pace somewhat slower, and the focus of attention on crafting rather than spells. The story is well thought out and the details mesh smoothly. This tells us we’re dealing with a rarely-talented author.

Nice story, must read

One of the best mmirog novels in this site. Especially since there are so few crafting types, it is nice to see a little behind the scene of all the battle and glory

A Refreshing Take on This Genre

First off, very glad that you did not give up on this story. I had not read it previously, but if you hadn't began again I never would have!

For the review, in general this story flows really well. I enjoyed all the little repetitive missions that he had to do at the beginning. JUST when you thought that the crotchety old man would FINALLY take him on as an apprentice, he sent our MC on another mission.

For grammar, there were only a few instances where I noticed simple mistakes.

Generally "Story" and "Style" run together with me. You need good style to make the story read well, and so on. The idea of banning people for mentioning "NPCs" or "Players" was a nice little idea. Also, the entire take on the whole "Crafter player" genre was really nice. At first when he was trying to become a magitech engineer I was worried, but that worry was cleared when he learned all the other skills for it as well.

The characters have great detail so far. The whole idea about the NPC's having their own AI's made this much easier to enjoy.

I wish you luck on future reading, and I will be favoriting this all the way!

I am not a expert on writing, but very found of VR stories. Age of Gods is a unique VR story in a way that it has a simple ABLITY SYSTEM, unlike other populer stories here on R.R.

I like crafting system and hope to see shope and business along with action in a balance way.

Wish you all the best
