We all have dreams of becoming powerful, becoming the cool mage that rules the world, living as the dashing rogue who can steal a kingdom's entire royal treasury undetected, or perhaps, the valiant knight whose prowess on the battlefield is unmatched by all.

However, when the apocalypse strikes, you can only use what you have at your disposal, be that guns, baseball bats, your fists, or maybe, just maybe, a shovel.

One young man who goes by the name of Darenzo has just had his world altered into one that is now the focal point of some sort of experiment.

Just at the end of his shift at the skip site, a worldwide announcement was made, that not only changed Darenzo's life, but also the lives of all of the Earth's inhabitants.

Can Darenzo survive and thrive in this changed world? Or will his growing madness best him? The answers to these questions can only be revealed with time.

[Guaranteed 2 chapters per week, the only exceptions being announced breaks or emergencies]

Kingdom Building LitRPG done right

I'll admit, I had put off reading this due to my disinterest in The Lone Wanderer, but after reading through SiS I may give that story another read. This hits all the right marks for a good story in it's respective genres. The system is handled well; it feels like an everpresent thing, but at the same time we aren't forced to read damage numbers constantly. The existence of higher beings is also dealt with pretty well. The author hasn't felt the need to over explain things with them right out the gate which tends to make such sub-plots tedious in most stories.

The only reason I rated four stars instead of five is because the system info dumps can over stay their welcome at times. And that the humor/relationships sometimes devolve into light novel tropes. While I don't hate either of these things they can become a bit irrating to read; especially if the joke is done over two or three chapters back to back.

Fun, Different, Interesting and Entertaining

I'll be honest, I'm no English major so my take on things is just that...my opinion with no "hard knowledge" other than being addicted to reading for over 40 years. That said, I really enjoy this story.  The main character and major supporting characters are not what you'd expect from the "standard template" of MC's. Just like everyone IRL has their own quirks and faults so too do these characters though they seem magnified if you will because of the situation and the focus being on them. Think of how you would react if you were placed in the same situation, would you calmly rationalize your way through an apocalypse or would you sometimes go with your "gut" or first impulse due to shock and having to adopt a whole new world view?

Others have complained about the pacing, my view is ... so what? I'm not reading this story in a race to get to the next part. As long as the story interests me and keeps my attention I don't care if it covers a few days or a few years. I'm not cramming for a final here, I'm being entertained. If the story stops entertaining me then I'll simply stop following it and move on to something else.

We are getting hours of entertainment here for free and these authors are spending their own time putting their work out there to see if we like it. I'm all for encouraging them to continue. If you don't like something make a comment on the chapter that contained it. It's actually surprising to me how many authors personally address just about all their comments and this author is one of them.

Anyway that's my two cents. It's an interesting story with a "fun" take on the system, good main characters with quirks and hang-ups like any of us (but magnified) which will likely get better fleshed out as the story progresses, a cool mix of genres (fantasy, current Earth, sci/fi) that surprisingly works well and an author that responds to their readers.

Overall: I really enjoy the novel and it hits all the points I usually like in a novel. It is also well written 5/5

Style: I enjoy this author's style a lot as well as the way this novel has been going 5/5

Story: So far some overarching world ending/destroying problem hasn't been revealed yet but things are being discovered and hinted about subtly. 5/5

Grammar: It's grammar. I don't know what I supposed to say about it? Lone has great grammar and I don't remember noticing any errors, unlike another author I have read who has written 100+ chapters and still has terrible grammar and subpar spelling. 5/5

Character: I enjoy his characters and they seem rather unique. The main character has some sort of mysterious background which seems to slowly be getting unveiled. 5/5

I also recommend his other novel Lone: The Wanderer

If you've read litRPG where the MC has secure plot armor and is constantly lucky then you've read this. The characters are flat and dull, having a very basic sense of morality without delving too deeply into others' perspective. In particular the emotional depth of the MC...throwing some profanity around to illustrate someone is very angry is simply poor writing skills. The writer also tried to establish the MC as a badass waaay too early; this is especially apparent when he kills someone for the first time and a little before that when he tries to act all alpha-like when saving a group of people. Being emotionally detached and selfish doesn't make you cool or better than others, it just makes you a douche.

I don't feel a connection with any of the characters. Reading feels like a chore and it doesn't get better as it progresses (I stopped 20 chapters in and skipped to a few recent chapters; yup, it's still bad).

Fun world, with a illogical MC.

World building is good, characters are decent.

MC makes little sense, is inconsistant and illogical with little justification. He starts as a normal guy with social issues who is a bit unstable due to the stressful situation. He makes some illogical and foolish decisions afterwich the author explains he was a meglomeniacal sociopath bent on world domination all along.

Could be fixed with a rewrite to make the character more consistent.

The quality of the dialogue and characterization is so poor that I created an account to leave this review so that hopefully someone else will be spared reading this.

Only read the first book (but the ending sux)

The first book is great aside from the ending (which sucks, but author said will be rewritten), i would give it four stars, but second book introduces some boring drama that brings the other issues with the novel to the surface.

Also, the synopsis on royal road sucks a*s, the story is about a young man who is tired of a normal life and a apocalypse suddenly happens, since he was holding a shovel he gets the class shovel knight, we read as he tries to live a meaningful life in the apocalypse.

Combat with monsters feel like a grind, since the beginning of the book the combat with monsters felt more like a chore.
Combat with people isn't that bad since they have the option of running away and people are valuable in the apocalypse, so it would be better to recruit them or something similar, it adds nuances to the fight.

It's hard to take the system seriously, it feels too much like an afterthought, the author describes it as if there are infinite options of pretty much everything, but it always boils down to the simple stuff

also Spoiler: Spoiler

The characters are alright, they often have a believable backstory (aside from MC) though it's annoying how often special people appear around the MC.

Book 2 gives a lot of attention to the MC's boring past and the situations with the gods, which are also not very interesting. There is no romantic develpment for the MC since he already had a girlfriend before the apocalypse, a twist is added to the monster attacks, but it's not a very interesting twist (though i haven't read past b2c51).

What really breaks the cammel's back for me is how MC steadily changes his personality, which is good, but his personality seems to becomes closer to a generic good guy mc, which isn't good at all.
