As the system initializes, the world shifts. Geography is rearranged and mixed, and levels and stats are instituted across the globe. On that night, one young man was walking through an underground tunnel, his mind on the small problems of his easy life. Because of his location during the shift, he starts in a dungeon far above his level, with no knowledge or teacher, or Newbie Village to guide him. Without a class, he struggles simply to survive in this world changed by its new connection to the Nexus.

But struggle he will, for he is Randidly Ghosthound, and this is only how his legend begins...

**Author's Note**

This started as a way to destress and play with overly complicated stats systems and level systems, and I just kept writing. I don't really take it very seriously, but feel free to read and enjoy.

Interesting, Well Written & NOT Fun (Painful)

Reviewed at: Chapter 1229

Reviewed after reading up through Chapter 845... revisited after skimming @ 1229.

I follow, at any one time, about 30 different stories and am a prolific reader and reviewer.  This was, for a long time, one of my favorite stories.  The author does a fantastic job with his world building and character development.  Also, given that this is a system apocalyse story, the "system" is fairly well developed and makes a lot of sense... at least initially.

The main character, Randidly Ghosthound (RG) starts, and remains, a somewhat tortured soul.  He has crappy parents, crappy neighbors, crappy "friends", and a not terribly great life.

I won't spoil the story by telling you what initially makes this character "special", aside from his ability to trudge forward while the world(s) repeatedly take massive dumps on his head, but I will say that this magic "bonus" does not last throughout the story.  After the harsh start, RG relies upon his own efforts and sacrifices to push forward towards his unknown goals (saving everyone maybe; only the author could say for sure).

As written, while a functional adult person, RG seems to be "on the spectrum" such that he communicates with others poorly, makes decisions that others don't understand, and is generally doesn't relate well to others even when everyone has the best of intentions.

Some things that caused me to lower my review.

SPOILERS FOLLOW

I don't like stories that skip between characters OFTEN... occasionally is fine, but at one point in the story, the author started exploring different character types, and abilities under the system.  These characters had tenuous, if any, connection to the main character and his story.  It was simply distracting and I'd be upset, were this a published story.  (But since I'm not paying, a free chapter-release story on a free author-development platform, and I understand that the author was simply practicing... whatever.)  Clearly the author is experimenting and trying to weave different concepts, and possibly even genres, into his story.  +1 for creativity, +1 for effort, -5 for enjoyability

Randidly is a beaten down character.  Unloved. (Respected, yes.  Viewed as important, yes.  Protected and/or cared for, no.)  RG is frequently betrayed and often asked to do unreasonable things by people because he can.  In a patently unfair world, I can understand why side-characters would ask.  However, the fact that RG simply takes it and soldiers forward without complaint is irritating.  At one point, RGs soul is about to collapse and he seeks help from a friend; that friend invites others over, and they collectively decide to slip a little "extra" into RGs soul to make him a more compliant self-sacrifice for the common good... "Thanks FRIENDS!"  Maybe RG is compliant because he is emotionally beaten down? Maybe he is the reincarnation of Mother Theresa?  Maybe he is an autistic person who is being taken advantage of?  Again, it isn't clear; RG never explains his actions or motivations.  I like a little more emotion or angst from my characters; humans are not robots and are entitled to be pissed off about cruddy situations.

The "system" allows RG to have pet, and assigns it as a system ability.  However, it isn't explained how or why RG is allowed to have an "independent" pet that is highly sentient with the ability to betray and/or actively oppose and ignore RG.  In one arc of the story, his system generated summoned beast abandons him... how does that work system?!  Is it a skill and/or system ability, or not?!!!!  It is unclear why this happens; the pet decides that RGs life is too "important" to Earth, so it doesn't follow him when he leaves to go to another world.  Alternately, it was moonlighting, without RGs consent, and having relations with a young woman.  So, possibly, it would rather pretend to be RG by borrowing his appearahce, date pop-stars, build houses, and grow apples.

Around Chapter 700 the story starts to get really hippy-dippy, making karma an actual force in the universe and starts imposing a new rule where equivalent exchange is required for the aquisition of new abilities (not previously required).

Around Chapter 830, RG deciding to sacrifice (cut off and give to the system) an arm so that the [fictional?] people in his soul, who didn't exist before RG dreamed them up, can come out to live in the "real world". (Author will probably have them betray him too... As if there aren't enough people screwing RG over in the "real world" already.) Note, that RGs sacrifice wasn't strictly required, as they could have lived happily in his soul indefinitely, and possibly eventually come out with greater difficulty; he chopped off his limb to give his soul-children a boost?!

After 830, the story started becoming traumatic for me, such that I stopped reading it.  The author did a GREAT job getting me wrapped up in the main character.  However, this worked against him as the author does an excellent job screwing his main character over, treating him unfairly, and demanding unreasonable sacrifices from him.  So, rather than wait to see what limb the author will amputate next, or what supprting relationship he will strip away from poor Randidly, I decided to enjoy other, different, stories.

Read a bit more lately, skimming to 1229.  Author seems to be keeping to the tragic, karmic, confusing nonsense.  Were it not for patreon, I assume he would have killed this story already; I'm not sure if I should curse or pity the poor author at this point.

Excellent Start, Jarring Tone Shifts

Having read several hundred chapters of this story, I can't make myself finish it, even though I want to. The beginning of the story is excellent. The character is likeable, his power progression is believeable, and his interactions with the world, for the most part, make sense. However, issues arrise the further into the story you get.

A little while into the story, just when things start to get interesting and the survival, town building, litrpg elements are getting good, the author shifts the setting to an entirely different planet and story type. This new setting seemed to be more of a xianxia novel in a Chinese-analogue world. While I enjoy that type of story too, that isn't the story I was having a great time reading. The sudden shift in tone, character personality, and setting were jarring. As I followed along with it, I got to where I liked the new story as well. It was the same writer, after all, and one of their strengths is in their depictions of the supporting characters. It got to the point where the xianxia setting had been going on for far more than the initial setting, in terms of chapters. Ultimately, when that story arc ended, there was yet another jarring, abrupt shift back into the original setting, entirely abandoning the other world with little resolution and satisfaction in regards to the supporting characters, who I had grown to like reading about.

Additionally, even though the story had shifted back to the original setting, the tone of the story changed yet again. The new story was more about a fledgeling god guiding and interacting with the people who worshipped him. I'm not talking about the literal story elements regarding that, those were introduced in an entertaining way. I'm talking about the MC's interactions with other characters in the story. This type of story can also be entertaining, if done well. Unfortunately, I don't believe it was done well and I found myself no longer enjoying the story. Part of that probably stems from the increasing amount of "edgy" story choices. I'm not normally one to turn my nose up at that kind of thing, but it got stale very quickly.

All in all, I do recommend the story, but I can't give it more than the 3 stars I've rated it for. The repeated shifts in tone and direction hold me back from doing so. The author desperately needs an editor, as much of this story could use rewriting to match the tone of the rest of it. It feels more like three different stories than it does a single story with multiple arcs. If you can put up with that kind of thing, then I highly recommend it. Personally, I could not.

Warning to potential readers.

This story is missing the TRAGEDY tag which it most definitely deserves.

Much of the plot, world-building and almost all the characters are involved in tragedy, pain and suffering.

Don't expect a lot of happy moments from this story.

People never seem to really win, not for long anyway. Almost no one is trust worthy and none of the victories really last more than a chapter or two before twisting into another inevitable tragedy. No one ever seems to catch a break.

I haven't been able to get past the 500's chapters and this is my third time trying to read through this.

Be prepared to feel constantly annoyed at everyone as no one really comes accross as all that likeable. Even the MC isn't really likeable.

On the plus side, great world building, if a little convoluted and better than average job at keeping side characters relevant instead of throwing them away every few chapters.

Also, this story updates more than any other on the active stories list that I know of.

Just make sure you know what you're getting into before starting, or else you'll end up like me and get too annoyed to finish.

But just because it's annoying doesn't mean it's not good.

Forced twists by author ruin the story.

Reviewed at: Chapter 715

Current to 715. I read this story because the world growth is interesting, the action/battles are usually very entertaining, and the author has good and unique ideas. Also, I'm current on all the stories I truly enjoy, this is not one of them.

While most individual chapters are good, when taken as a total story or arc the story is awful. Characters are incredibly inconsistent, the author poorly explains decisions and regularly chooses the worse possible options.

Lastly, what truly hurts this story is the author's fascination with everything needing a cliffhanger and a twist. Every decision that must be made, every action to advance the plot, everything will be a twist. There is no pleasure in contemplating options for the character because the author will make up some unpredictable BS which has never been hinted at to move forward.

With a true editor to recommend rewrites this story could follow the same plot and be incredible, as it is, it's barely mediocre.

Previous review below:

470 chapters in, and I will try to finish. Unfortunately, the previous 200 chapters have been irritating, and the next arc which is beginning doesn't seem like it'll be any better.

The action and growth in this story is excellent.

Character development would be excellent if the characters stayed true to the personalities being developed.

The issue is that the author has fallen in love with creating twists. In order to do this all of the characters frequently break from the developed personalities or they suddenly make immensely stupid decisions.

And if it's not stupid broken behavior, it's enemies covered in plot armor with so many backup plans and pulling tricks out of thin air, or breaking/ignoring established rules everything becomes ridiculous.

Characters 3/5 (author ignores what has been previously written too often)

Story 2/5 (Plot only advances through twists, again, and again 1/5, story ideas, action scenes 4/5)

The story plot doesn't even need to change, the author just needs to use some better setup and stop using the same "Surprise!" at every possible turn.

The start is ok. World gets LitRPG like system and MC spawns in a dungeon which makes him much stronger than anyone else. I can roll with that, could have been done better, but it wa worth the read.

In the first part the MC starts collecting people and builds a community and deals with the new world. Again, I can dig that.

For some fucking reason, suddenly bunny and turtle people appear and, because people hated them understandably, soon dissapear again. Kind of weard, but I can get over it.

Now comes the big one, for some reason, propably because the author was bored of his own story, the MC gets transported to a whole new world and the whole point of this story changes. Prior we had a survival of the new world kind of story, suddenly we had one of those Chinese stories where all people do, is train and in battles stand around and fight with their energy. At this point I really thought about dropping this more than once. But I pushed on. In the end this part in this new world is longer than the actual story I was promised, which was a survival story in a LitRPG world.

When the arc is over back it goes to our world where there a heck of people you don't even know anymore, fighting a new antagonist. I dropped it somewhere in that arc.

So should you read this or not? It starts off better than most stories on here (which doesn't say much) but quality drops and drops and drops. Actual story doesn't really have anything to do with what it promises. I wouldn't read it again to be honest, but if you don't have anything to read at the moment, try and see for yourself.

This fiction could easily span a number of individual books which is great; but it makes rating it as a whole pretty difficult.

First couple 'Arcs' of the story are 5 stars easy. I loved it so much I did the copy/paste and created an offline copy I could read x10 without blowing my bandwidth allowance. It was that good. MC was a little OP, but the plot and growth kept up with that and there were always more challenges.

Then we come to the problem. Author created a ~6 month break in the story and everything went to crap.

A good litrpg has systems that are consistent. Unfortunely the Author decided he wanted to be more like priateaba's Wandering Inn and started quit keeping up with the elements that made the first Arcs so great.

Because I was such a huge fan of the first parts- I started helping with the fan stuff ~ creating character sheets over time on google spreadsheets, etc. So image surprise after the 'break' when skills went negative, points didn't add up, and the improvements MC did acquire didn't match up with the story's rhetoric.

Author took the time to discuss how XP is earned and then completely ignored it?!

Best analogy~ A good story is like a symphony or tune. Every character, plot, system is a different instrument all working in concernt to great something fantastic and enjoyable. However of the late there are so many wrong notes, flat tones, and different tempos playing at the same time that it's just LOUD noise!

Author is certainly capable, but there's been no move by him to EDIT/Correct the gross mistakes he's made and the story continues to spiral.

Long time lurker/reader, Rarely post/review

I'm splitting my review into two main parts: Rebuttal to criticism of this fiction/author and review of actual product, read if interested.

Review of "The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound":
Overall high marks.

STORY 5/5: The story is compelling and drags you onward. It starts with a college student and puts them through a crucible of horror and discovery tempering them into something MORE. Once he's introduced back into the general populace I feel the fiction really picks up and does a lot to both appeal to the OP MC faction while still having him go out and experience the world and realize he has to gain power at the edge of death (for the power growth faction) if he wants to actually accomplish his goals.

CHARACTERS 4/5: Believable and understandable growth arcs for most characters. I'm only awarding a 4/5 because I am not dragged back to this story time and again for characters as much as I am the story in general. Not for any particular flaw in character design or portrayal.

STYLE 4/5: Usually third person limited on the MC which gives a very descriptive and interesting perspective on all the changes to the world and the path(s) he takes to try to influence it and control his own destiny. Jumping character narrative for other perspective adds a different flavor to the story and fills in gaps in understanding. For the most part the jumps are very fun and explain how the rest of the world sees the MC, only giving 4 because there are a few perspectives I felt were redundant and/or a waste of time, this is most likely personal and open to taste but I'm hoping 4/5 works for most people.

GRAMMAR 3.5/5: Overall very good. Update 6/25/18, I'm downgrading this section to 3.5. In recent chapters the errors have been increasing. Sometimes in the 3-4 range per chapter. It has gotten to the point where it is distracting somewhat, I can still understand the story but it's like speech to text recognition or a bad auto-correct. Someone should say 'sure' to agree with you not 'shore' *unless you're doing an accent*. Will probably downgrade overall to 4.5 if continues, but other features keep drawing me back and I still enjoy the fiction.

REBUTTAL TO CRITICISM: I came out of my lurkerdom because enough people have been leaving negative comments to the author about his/her release schedule that s/he felt the need to respond to them. Short version: Puddles has released 2,000 pages in the last 9 months for free, at a consistently high quality and maintaining a spot in the top 20 Active-only ranking on RRL.

Puddles will usually try to leave a rough draft on the Patreon daily and if you have to have your fix and don't care that the proofreading/editing is non-existent then there you go. If you're on RRL only and want to read for free take solace in the fact that it's one of the highest volume producers in the top 20 and yeah, you might go a few days without and then get 4 or 7 chapters at a time. If you think that's unreasonable then go ahead and publish your own fiction on here and we'll be delighted to let you know how you measure up to your standards.

TLDR: Very good. Don't get bent out of shape on release schedule, take comfort in the fact that the release volume is high and well done.

Would not recommend for readers. Would recommend for writers

For those that are confused by the title, let me explain...

Here follows the tragedy that is The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound.

The story of Randidly Ghosthound (hereafter referred to as 'RG') is a cautionary tale of what should not be read for the enjoyment of it, but rather for more ideas for other aspiring authors as they go about their own writing endeavours.

It starts off with our main character (hereafter referred to as 'MC') starting his life in the apocolypse, underground. This is ironic as that was the highest point in the story when it comes to the effort put in.

From then on, it follows our MC in his travels and hardships across the new and changed world (as well as other worlds), detailing his thought processes as he goes about his daily self-imposed tasks and encounters with others.

The enjoyment of the story, however, can be seen in a similar light as a graph of the stock price of the Bitcoin. It shoots up due to a fresh and unique take on the bread and butter of Royal Road stories, two years ago. Even spawning numerous other stories that took inspiration from its plot and ideas. Thereafter steadily declining as it grew in popularity, until it decayed into what it is today.

There are quite a few mini goals throughout the story that pops up for the MC to tackle. From conflicts in strange relationships, to training for specific battles, to just training in general, there always seems to be something for the MC to do, and when there isn't, there are POV shifts but we won't talk about those (apart from how not to do them) as they have almost no bearing on the plot, besides a few mentions here and there as if to remind the readers that they happened, even if they don't actually matter at all.

Using that same graph analogy, the plot progression steadily declines until it reaches the point where much is said but little gets done. The quality of writing, naturally, follows this same pattern to accommodate. The chapters become filler. They get posted merely for the sake of getting something out there. Each couple-hundred-chapter arc can practically be summed up in a single paragraph with little lost to the imagination. Indeed there are entire chapters that only have one or two paragraphs, the rest getting filled with the MC's stats (for some reason, as I can't imagine anyone not bored out of their minds actually reading through all of it). Paragraphs and paragraphs are filled with the repitition of the MC's thought processes. Fight scenes become slog-fests of over-analytics and to see who can learn the most life lessons after getting knocked out. Characters make the strangest choices for no other reason than that they're "special" or need to fill an archetypal for that specific arc, before getting discarded to make room for the next bunch. There is no end goal in sight. There are entities so much stronger than the MC that you can expect another couple thousand chapters before those are overcome and I wouldn't be surprised if more get revealed just to further the plot.

There are just so many patrons for this that I honestly don't see an end to it and at this point, I doubt the author does either.

Some interesting thoughts do get explored, however, and Cimmerian's review,  among others, can be read for more info on that. (His is the first review you'll probably see)

The tragedy here, for me, is that it was my favorite for a long time and is assuredly the most consistent one I've seen on this site, in terms of releases. It's the only one I'm still reading, that I also read two years ago. Although, I'm not even sure anymore if it's because I actually like it, or because it's been such a constant that I'm reluctant to let go of it.

This is why I woudn't recommend this for readers as, while the ideas that are explored here and there are awesome, the execution of those ideas fall flat tremendously. This is why I would recommend it to writers, as both a cautionary tale on what not to do, as well as getting ideas that they can run with and make great.

...as well as maybe not fall into the patreon trap of a never-ending story.

Waiting for the next story.

Reviewed at: Chapter 951

I will keep this brief as many others have written better reviews than I could.

I enjoyed this story a lot at the beginning, mostly because I am a sucker for this kind of litRPG, and I am disappointed it couldn't hold me longer. The grammar is fine and though the style is dry, it is good enough to keep the plot going. The plot, too, is fine. It is clearly defined(most of the time) and nothing too convoluted ruins it throughout the story. The problem is the characters, at the centre of which is Randidly himself. More than they are empty it seems they such everything good about the story into them. The forced conflicts and romances, the meaningless betrayals, they are all so dull. I could even forgive that massive flaw if not for the story seemingly following side characters more than it does Randidly, something many have complained about.

I am honestly just waiting for something new from Puddles because I already trust his imagination to write something better if given the chance.

The Characters are Bi-polar

This story was one I had a lot of fun with. Starting out I really enjoyed it but with the recent devolopements and shifts in what seems like the story as a whole I don't want to read it. You get attached to certain charecters just for it to lead to them doing something that is completely unreasonable for how they were established. Imagine if you set up a morally stable charecter who was rightious about thier life. Then that charecter went out and commited mass atrocities for no reason. This has led my on a downward spiral as I caught up to the latest chapters. This went from fun and exiting to tedious and me wishing it most of the things that have happened did not.
