An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, or a place to find adventures, a starting ground for quests and legends.

In this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her.

But an inn is what she found, and so that’s what she becomes. An innkeeper who serves drinks to heroes and monsters–

Actually, mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

This is the story of the Wandering Inn.

The characters feel like they exist in a world with moving parts far larger than they are. Been reading this close to the very beginning, and realized I haven't yet rated it on this site.

It's excellent, and I can't really think of any flaws.

There is so much WI it is hard to narrow it down to a single field or even review. The further you get into the chapters the more it sucks you in, branching into more and more characters until you realize you aren't reading a story anymore, you're reading a world. And like a world, it isn't linear or neat or always what you want.

My favorite love of this work is also why I have conflicting emotions about it: the characters. Sometimes, pirateaba will meander away from Erin and introduce a new and wonderful character I like even more than the plucky innkeeper. Then the next chapter follows some annoyance (like a certain skeleton) and I'm waiting weeks just to get a chapter I WANT to read. Grr. I also don't care for Ryoka half the time either.

But! But, the mastercrafting of it all is such a delight to read, even if you don't care for the rather slow burn of an innkeeper, the prose alone will keep anyone entertained.

So good I had to make an account

This is one of those stories that is just too good to be on this site.  If not for the genre being what it is, I could see this being professionally published.  I enjoyed it so much, I had to make an account on royalroad and then make a patreon account to support the author.

The main characters are complex and have depth.  They aren't overpowered superheroes, although they do have plot armor, but you should expect that in most novels aside from George R. R. Martin's.

The setting is well built and fleshed out pretty well.  The author has created an independent fantasy world while also integrating some elements of common mythology.  Plenty of details are added to keep things interesting, but at the same time, you're not being overwhelmed.  Pirateaba found that sweet middle ground that so many others struggle with.

Keep up the great work and thank you for writing this wonderful story.

My Personal Favorite

This story is absolutely adorable. I love Erin and how she interacts with the world she finds herself in. Just fantastic. Well worth a read. It is light on action in parts, but it is all the better for it in my opinion.

Can't Find the Right Set of Words!

This story enthralls the reader.

The lore of the world is ever expanding and unique, with an endless amount of mysticism that always calls to be revealed. Lore building isn't so much as the author explaining the world, but the characters and yourself unveiling the world through your own interpretation. If we were to describe other lore builders to the author, then we would have the explanation of the universe VS. the peeling of layers to discover the truths of the universe.

Style in this story is great, I can't describe it any other way.

Grammar problems? Those exist?

Characters are unique. No character is like any other, they all have their own unique backstories that influence their judgement and viewpoint of the world. What's even more amazing is that we get to experience and see the viewpoints of many characters. It's not a transmigration novel of a character growing OP, and everyone going along with it. All transmigrated individuals insert their being into the world(even if they hate the world) and develop with the stimulus that's thrown in their way.

Mood; there's varying amount of moods as life isn't always sunshine and rainbows.

Examples: Death, sadness, depression, insanity, fear, dissapointment, and emptiness.

It's funny. On a site like this the story is usually the main point. The main character is OP or stupidly advantaged and utterly exploits it to rise to the top.

Not that there's anything wrong with that of course. It is successful for a reason.

But this. This. Is something else. This is about people, characters, feelings, interactions. This story is the second greatest I have ever read and the main character runs a goddamn inn. The only thing the main character excels at is cooking and interacting to people and yet through some word weaving magic this writer has created a realistic, interesting and complex WORLD with even more realistic, interesting and complex CHARACTERS.

You will NOT find the protagonist slaughtering a dragon here.

But good Lord, when that dragon falls, you'll cry, whoop and laugh.

And what more do you want from a story other than an experience.

The best story on this website.

This is easily the most interesting, most consistent, and best-written story I have ever read online. It is even one of the best fantasy fictions I know, easily competing with the most popular published series. With each chapter the scope expands and the plot becomes more interesting, with plenty of satisfying climaxes throughout.

The characters in this are also simply amazing. The main character (Erin) is a wonderful character displaying depth as well as a unique personality, which is refreshing to find in a web-novel. Almost every single character also becomes more developed, with motives and goals. There are also many side stories which interestingly expand the world and characters, each linking to the overarching plot in unique and impactful ways.

The writing is always easy to understand while having stylistic flourishes making it a joy to read. Only extremely rarely do I have to stop to clarify what is going on. Character interactions also feel completely natural, showing the deep insight the author has into their own characters. The action is also clear and exhilarating, often having important emotional stakes connected to characters that you will have become invested in.

If you want great pacing, brilliant characters, and an engaging story then you should probably read this. Not only is the wandering inn consistently great, it is also consistently improving.

Everything the Reviews Rave About and More

The Wandering Inn is officially longer than A Song of Fire and Ice (Game of Thrones).

And it's nearly as good, too. The characters are likeable, the worldbuilding is complex (the world is massive) and the twists always land well.

An epic in the original sense of the word

Literary masterpiece. Plot depth and scale comparable to Brandon Sanderson’s epic high fantasy series The Stormlight Archive. Quality of writing and character development are also as well-crafted as the massive, slowly unravelling plot. Hands down the best free novel I’ve ever read.
